Functions as a first assistant during operative and other invasive procedures in accordance with credentials, privileges, experience, education and competency verification.

 

 Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  •      Reviews patient health data relevant to the operative or invasive procedure (e.g. history and physical, films)
  • Functions as a first assistant during operative and other invasive procedures by:
    • Providing exposure through correct use of instruments, retractors, suction, and sponging techniques as directed by the surgeon;
    • Handling and dissecting tissues as directed by the surgeon;
    • Clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, and ligating vessels as directed by the surgeon;
    • Placing drains as directed by the surgeon;
    • Suturing muscle, fascia, subcutaneous, and skin as directed by the surgeon
  • Demonstrates principles of safe positioning of the surgical patient
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of normal and pathological anatomy and physiology
  • Monitors patients and identify deviations from expected responses requiring immediate action
  • Adapts the preparation of the procedure to meet the needs of the individual pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients
  • Serves as a resource to peers, colleagues, and others in relation to first assistant activities
  • Maintains regulatory, credentialing, and privileging requirements necessary for practice as a first assistant
  • Participates in ongoing educational and competency verification activities applicable to first assistant activities
  • The surgical first assist role is an extension of the surgical tech role.  This position requires further education above and beyond the certified surgical technologist.  This person is responsible to know the role of the technologists and able to function in that role in addition to knowing the first assist role.  The first assist has greater responsibility for the patient during surgery.  This person assists the surgeon and performs those tasks as defined above.   They help expedite the surgery for the surgeon.
  • The assistant is an extension of the scrub role and includes registered nurses and certified surgical technologist.
  • Recognizes safety hazards and initials corrective action.
  • Demonstrates technical skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in principles of asepsis, wound healing, infection control, hazard communications, and universal precautions.
  • Demonstrates principles of safe positioning of the surgical patient.
  • Provides visualization of the operative site during the surgical procedure.
  • Demonstrates appropriate techniques to assist with the closure of body planes.
  • Expedites operative procedure by anticipating needs of the surgeon.
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of normal pathological anatomy.
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of abnormal and pathological anatomy and physiology.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of emergency situations.
  • Demonstrated superior organizational skills.
  • Continually maintains a net and orderly sterile field as dictated by the sequence of the procedure.
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of location, care, and safe use of positioning equipment, especially:
    • Amsco-Steris OR Tables
    • Orthopedic Fracture Table
    • Total Knee Positioner
    • Total Hip Positioner
    • Hand-Arm Table
    • Cystoscopy table accessories for Amsco-Steris OR Tables
    • Allen Stirrups
  • Monitors patient to identify deviations from expected responses requiring immediate action
  • Participates in TJC and WHO recommended and approved “Time Out” procedures to ensure that the patient, surgeon, anesthesiologist, circulator, and the booked case all agree before the patient undergoes anesthesia.
  • Is consistently ready and prepared for assigned cases.
  • Appropriately prepares and handles all specimens for laboratory analysis
  • Adapts the preparation of the procedure to meet the needs for treatment of individual pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients
  • Follows Policies and Procedures and AORN guidelines in accounting for all sponges, needles, and instruments during and after the procedure and documents in appropriate area.
  • Takes initiative for professional development and keeps current with the evolution of surgical practice and procedures.
  • Effectively functions as a preceptor for peers and new employees.
  • Evidences the knowledge and ability to assess and interpret data about the patient’s growth and development in order to identify each patients needs and provide appropriate care; including age-related care where appropriate.

  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions; ensures compliance with Joint Commission and other external and internal regulatory agencies.
  • Maintains the integrity of confidential patient information in accordance with HIPAA and hospital policy, including accessing, using and disclosing patient information relevant to the individual employee’s job duties.  Also maintains confidentiality of other customer and hospital business affairs.
  • Adheres to the standards of Magruder Hospital’s corporate compliance policies and seeks guidance and training when necessary to resolve questions about the policies.  Reports violations in accordance with corporate compliance and organizational standards.
  • Attendance is an essential function of this position.  Reports to work on time and as scheduled; Shows respect for co-workers by following established break times;   Keeps personal conversations and telephone calls to a minimum.
  • Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
