Position Summary
Reporting to the Chief People Officer, the Vice President of HR Strategy & Consulting is an enterprise strategist and transformational leader responsible for redefining how HR partners with the business across Baystate Health and Health New England. This role sets the strategy for HR Business Partner and Consulting functions, compliance oversight, labor strategy, employee relations, and reorganizations. The VP will elevate HR to a unified, strategic consulting capability that drives organizational transformation, workforce alignment, leadership effectiveness, and cultural cohesion across the health system.
This leader will be charged with reimagining how HR Business Partners deliver value. This role will establish a new operating model that leverages technology, automation, and streamlined processes to allow HRBPs to act as true advisors to operational and clinical leaders. In addition, the VP will play a pivotal role in advancing leadership development, equipping leaders with the skills to effectively manage teams, address workforce challenges, and build a culture of accountability and engagement.
Key Responsibilities
Executive & Strategic Leadership
- Serve as a member of, and resource to, the Human Resources Executive Team and Baystate Health Leadership Team.
- Act as a thought partner to the CHRO and HRE, contributing to system-wide HR strategy, culture change, and transformation initiatives.
- Participate in organization-wide committees and projects that advance Baystate Health’s strategic goals.
HR Business Partnership & Consulting
- Lead and transform the HRBP/Consulting function into a proactive, solutions-oriented model recognized for strategic impact and business acumen.
- Lead a team of HR Business Partners across hospitals, physician practices, and the health plan to deliver strategic HR consultation to senior leaders.
- Establish and maintain HRBP service delivery standards, including performance metrics, partnership expectations, and leader satisfaction measures.
- Foster HR Business Partner relationships built on deep knowledge of business objectives, providing strategic counsel and analytics in support of goal attainment.
- Independently partner with leaders on all HR and business functions, proactively identifying and addressing issues.
Employee & Labor Relations
- Provide executive oversight of employee relations, ensuring consistent, fair, and timely resolution of workplace issues.
- Partner with leaders to set the strategy and build leader capability in handling performance, conflict, and employee engagement, while also developing HRBP teams to deliver this support effectively.
- Develop and execute Baystate’s enterprise-wide labor strategy, including union planning, contract negotiations, and workforce stability initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with labor and employment regulations, proactively mitigating risk across the system.
Leadership Development & Change Management
- Build leader capability by delivering practical development strategies, coaching, and HRBP-led support programs.
- Coach leaders to accelerate leadership effectiveness, maximize results, and support leader assimilation for new hires, internal moves, and promotions.
- Position HRBPs as leadership consultants who help managers and executives strengthen accountability, engagement, and team performance.
- Effectively communicate expectations with business, operational, and HR partners while promoting a One Team collaborative atmosphere across all HR functions.
- Drive change management practices to enable organizational effectiveness, incorporating diversity & inclusion strategies to foster a culture of inclusion and competitive advantage.
Compliance & Governance
- Oversee compliance with federal, state, and local labor and employment regulations, as well as requirements from regulatory agencies such as The Joint Commission and others, with a heavy focus on licensures, certifications, and accreditation standards.
- Partner with legal and compliance teams to establish consistent practices and minimize organizational risk.
- Champion ethical practices and fairness as central to Baystate’s employment philosophy.
Operational Excellence
- Optimize the human resources delivery model to improve effectiveness, efficiency, and service quality.
- Simplify processes, systems, and interactions that add value to leadership and solve day-to-day operational problems.
- Develop organizational effectiveness strategies that support team performance, collaboration, and accountability.
Qualifications
- 12+ years of progressive HR leadership experience, including executive-level partnership in a complex, multi-site healthcare system or similarly regulated environment.
- Demonstrated success transforming HRBP/consulting functions into strategic, high-impact business drivers.
- Expertise in employee relations, labor relations strategy, compliance, and workforce planning.
- Experience leading HR through organizational change, restructuring, or integration opportunities.
- Strong record of building leadership capability and aligning people strategies with operational, financial, and cultural goals.
- Exceptional executive presence with the ability to influence senior leaders and build trust across the organization.
- Healthcare experience strongly preferred.
