Job Summary:

Works under the guidance of the Inpatient Nurse Manager assisting with leadership, direction, and technical expertise in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of delivery of nursing services twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week in order to maintain continuity of comprehensive care.  Collaborates with the Inpatient Nurse Manager, Nurse Educator, and other appropriate disciplines to assist with education of staff and patients.

Job Duties:

Routine duties shall include providing health care services to individuals eligible for services in accordance with the self-governance compact and funding agreement between the Cherokee Nation and United States executed under the authority of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act. Practices only within the boundaries of their competence, based on their documented education, training, supervised experience, state and national professional credentials, and appropriate professional experience. Supervises nursing personnel in assigned areas:  Surgical Services, Obstetrical Services, Medical/Surgical Services, Intensive Care Services, Emergency Services, and Outpatient Services.  Coordinates and ensures adequate clinical staffing (approves all training requests, leave requests, and overtime), clinical organizational functions (medical supplies, equipment, and maintenance), clinical safety (a safety management program is in place), and department communication (planned program and information disseminated to the staff). Ensures that all Cherokee Nation Health Services policies and procedures, national nursing standards, applicable accreditation standards, federal and state guidelines, and appropriate protocols are followed. Provides services of a scope, quality, and quantity consistent with Cherokee Nation policies. Initiates, develops, monitors, and revises policy, guidelines, protocol, and continuous quality improvement to assure quality, effectiveness, and appropriateness of patient care is provided; consistent with Cherokee Nation WW Hastings Hospital goals, current standards/issues, and future needs of the Native American population. Ensures that an interdisciplinary approach to patient care is maintained within the department. Provides skilled and comprehensive care to the patient, as necessary, to cover staffing shortages. Closely observes patients' conditions that may require emergency treatment. Exercises sound judgment in interpreting observations to the physician and initiating emergency measures. Participates in interviewing and selecting staff. Maintains competency in current nursing skills, knowledge, practices and procedures; and in leadership and management knowledge and abilities. Serves on various hospital/nursing committees. Coordinates with other departments to provide a clean and safe work environment. Maintains communication that promotes collegiality among patient care team. Collaborates with Nurse Managers, Nurse Educator, and other disciplines as appropriate to provide education to staff and patients. Demonstrates positive role modeling and leadership qualities.  Adheres to and promotes professional, ethical, and legal standards of nursing. Maintains and promotes positive personal work habits, interpersonal skills and public relationships with employees, administration, medical staff, patients and families.Provides Human Resources with a copy of current licensures, certifications, renewal of licensures and certifications upon receipt thereof. Other duties may be assigned.

 

On Call: Employee is required to be on-call on a rotating basis including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES  

Manages up to four (4) subordinate supervisors who supervise a total of twenty-one (21) to fifty (50) employees in Health Services. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications:

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT 

Has completed the basic professional curricula of a state board-approved registered nursing education program conducted in a member board jurisdiction that meets the requirements of the Oklahoma Board of Nursing, and holds or is entitled to hold a diploma or degree therefrom.

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT 

Three (3) years of clinical experience.  Experience in an inpatient setting preferred.

 

COMPUTER SKILLS

An individual should have knowledge of Inventory software; Order processing systems; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS 

Must possess a license as a Registered Nurse (RN) from the Oklahoma Board of Nursing (OBN) or possess a multistate RN license accepted by the OBN, no substitutions.  Must maintain license throughout employment. Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and maintain throughout employment.  Can be obtained during orientation. Must be certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and maintain throughout employment.  If not certified, ACLS certification must be obtained within six (6) months of hire. All Departments, except the Obstetrical Department, must be certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and maintain throughout employment.  If not certified, PALS certification must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.  Obstetrical Department – Must be certified in Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and maintain throughout employment.  Can be obtained during orientation. Must be certified in National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) and maintain throughout employment.  If not certified, NIHSS must be obtained within six (6) months of hire. The applicant/employee must possess a valid driver’s license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating.

                                                            Department (ED) experience before performing triage)

 

Obstetrical Department:               Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

                                                            Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) - within orientation

Must meet and maintain pre-employment and periodic background investigation and adjudication for child care. Educated and compliant with HIPAA regulations and maintains strict confidentiality of patient information.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
