About the Department

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Facilities Supervisor-The Hawk, the Recreation Supervisor supervises the programming, staff, equipment and operations of the aquatics center, fitness center, and gymnasium at The Hawk. This position will coordinate and implement programs, classes and activities related to all aquatics, fitness, health, and wellness initiatives of the entire Special Services Department. This position will work under the direction of the Facilities Supervisor-The Hawk and support the daily operations of The Hawk. Will also assist in the planning and scheduling of City facilities and services, including programs, conferences, food service, and recreation at City facilities. Assists with maintenance and upkeep of facilities, including participation in room setup and building and facility repairs. Assists with the coordination of the custodial, maintenance, and contractual staff.

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Supervises the daily operation of The Hawk and provides leadership for full and part-time aquatics, fitness, gym, and Guest Services staff. Recruits, directs, assigns, schedules, supervises, trains and evaluates all aquatics, fitness, gym, and Guest Services staff.

2. Assists in planning, scheduling, and coordinating the use of various City Facilities.

3. Assists in the maintenance and upkeep of facilities, including participation in room setup and building and facility repairs.

4. Assists with the coordination of custodial, maintenance, and contractual staff in accordance with union contracts, city and departmental policies and procedures and the Standard Practice Guide.

5. Responsible for covering Manager on Duty shifts for The Hawk when assigned.

6. Performs various personnel administrative functions, including interviewing, screening, and hiring candidates for employment.

7. Trains employees, monitors progress, reviews performance, and provides feedback for staff and completes performance evaluations.

8. Oversees the operation and maintenance of all fitness and gym areas, including equipment. Teaches classes, collects fees, and enforces rules of the fitness and gym areas as needed.

9. Oversees the operation and maintenance of all aquatics areas, including equipment. Lifeguards, teaches classes, collects fees, and enforces rules of the aquatics areas as needed.

10. Interacts with facility users, including program participants, parents, community organizations, school representatives, city officials and employees, and members of the public to assist in the planning, coordination, and execution of events and activities.

11. Provides information, resolves problems, and assures the efficient operation of the facility. Responds to inquiries and complaints regarding aquatics operations, fitness operations, facility operations, and services.

12. Performs divisional purchasing functions for programs and is involved in preparing specifications and requisitions, ordering equipment, materials, supplies and services needed, maintaining records and preparing reports for departmental use.

13. Prepares reports and maintains records and prepares the divisional budget based on past experiences, present needs and future expectations, monitoring expenditures throughout the fiscal year for conformity to final budget.

14. Performs a variety of office tasks. Prepares correspondence, answers phones, and assists residents with questions and other office duties.

15. Maintains knowledge of issues and trends for aquatics, fitness, facility management, and programs through contact with other governmental agencies and colleagues, professional literature and by attending seminars and other educational meetings. Examines new products, procedures and policies, and makes recommendations.

16. Work hours vary based on programs, activities, and facility usage.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s Degree in Parks and Recreation or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some experience in facilities management, including administration, maintenance, safety and risk management, housekeeping, and scheduling. Supervisory experience is essential. Knowledge of fitness operations, aquatics, event planning, coordinating, and implementing conference programming or special events is highly desirable.


SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Computer Skills

Basic computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, publishing, e-mail, presentation software, and video conferencing. Knowledge of RecTrac, FAMIS work order and VFA Facility Software or similar, BS&A Financial Tracking or similar, Win DSX SQL software, Niagara Network building automation systems (HVAC) are all preferred.


Certificates & Licenses

Valid Operator’s License with a good driving record CPR/First Aid Certification (within 90 days of hire)

Red Cross Lifeguard Certification or equivalent (within 90 days)

Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification or equivalent (within 180 days) Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator (within 180 days of hire)

Nationally recognized NCCA accredited personal trainer certification (within 180 days of hire)

Other Qualifications

START DATE & WORK SCHEDULE:
ASAP
40 Hours per week. Typically Tuesday - Saturday. Some evenings, weekends, and M.O.D. shifts as needed.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of the job the employee is required to stand, sit, walk, talk, and use hands and fingers to handle, or operate objects, and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds. Must be able to assist with room set- ups, and be able to complete occasional custodial and maintenance tasks


Other Physical Requirements

Good vision, hearing, sense of smell, hand eye coordination.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed indoors and outdoors with a significant amount of each workday spent in and around the aquatics, fitness, and gymnasium areas of the building. Work is performed both during the day and night due to program schedules. Exposure to hazardous chemicals used in the pool and locker rooms.
