Job Summary:
The Mechanic II is responsible for ensuring the optimal performance of all City vehicles and equipment by performing comprehensive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs. This role plays a critical part in keeping City operations running smoothly, handling both mechanical and electrical repairs to maintain the reliability and safety of the City's fleet.
Minimum Job Requirements:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Texas driver’s license
- At least three (3) years of related automotive repair and maintenance experience.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License Class B with preferred endorsement within six (6) months of employment.
Essential Job Functions:
- Perform all duties assigned to Mechanic I.
- Performs intermediate level preventative maintenance and repairs on automobiles, emergency vehicles, dump trucks, light construction equipment and various agricultural equipment.
- Prepare work orders and communicate regarding status of City vehicles and equipment.
- May perform roadside maintenance and service on all vehicles and equipment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Methods, materials, tools and standard practices of the automotive mechanic trade.
- Equipment and vehicles used throughout the City.
- City practices, policies and procedures.
- Department safety practices and procedures.
Skills in:
- Preparing and maintaining records, processing purchase orders, and following oral and written instructions.
- Performing manual labor for major mechanical repairs and reading automotive repair manuals.
- Building positive working relationships with employees and drivers while providing excellent customer service.
- Using computers, related software, and caring for tools and equipment used in automotive maintenance and repair.
Physical Demands/Work Environment:
Work is primarily performed in Mechanic Shop. Continuous outdoor and indoor activity, frequent sitting, standing, walking, squatting, bending, twisting upper body, climbing, exposure to extreme heat, cold, noise, mechanical hazards, fume/odor hazards, toxic waste/material hazards, occasional kneeling, crawling, carrying up to 100 pounds, lifting up to 100 pounds. Exposed to seasonal temperatures while operating and maintaining heavy construction equipment. Possibility of exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals, materials and inclement weather while in the field.
