About the Department
Under occasional supervision, the Maintenance Crew Leader is responsible for leading and coordinating the daily work of the maintenance crew while performing skilled maintenance and repair tasks at all Lancaster County parks, playgrounds, athletic fields, and recreation facilities. This position supervises Maintenance Crew Workers and ensures work is completed safely, efficiently, and according to department standards. The Crew Leader reports directly to the Assistant Maintenance Division Supervisor.
Position Duties
- Leads and supervises maintenance staff in the performance of grounds and facility maintenance, repairs, and project work.
- Plans, assigns, and monitors daily tasks for assigned crew members; ensures quality control and timely completion of work.
- Trains new and existing crew members on safety procedures, equipment use, maintenance standards, and department protocols.
- Operates and maintains a wide variety of equipment, including tractors, backhoes, front-end loaders, mowers, chainsaws, lifts, gators, side-by-sides, weed eaters, bush hogs, hand tools, carpentry tools, and mechanics tools.
- Performs inspections of parks, playgrounds, and recreational facilities to identify hazards, repair needs, and maintenance priorities.
- Performs skilled maintenance including:
- Lawn care and landscaping equipment
- Lighting
- Plumbing
- Lifts
- Playground and athletic field maintenance
- Playground inspections
- Irrigation system repairs
- Tree trimming and debris removal
- Carpentry, painting, and light construction
- Small engine repairs (e.g., mowers, trimmers, blowers)
- Ensures proper vehicle and equipment checks; performs routine maintenance or reports larger mechanical issues.
- Assists with inventory of supplies, tools, and parts needed for routine maintenance and special projects.
- Participates in planning, setup, and breakdown for special events hosted by Parks and Recreation.
- Responds to emergency repair requests and weather-related cleanups as needed.
- Maintains detailed records of daily work, equipment usage, and staff assignments.
- Ensures compliance with all safety policies and procedures for both personnel and public areas.
- Works occasional evenings and weekends based on department needs and events.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in facility/grounds maintenance, including at least 1 year in a lead or supervisory role.
- Valid South Carolina driver’s license required; CDL preferred.
- Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining landscaping and construction equipment.
- Obtain your Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) within 9 months of the start date
- Mechanical aptitude and experience with AC and small engine repair preferred.
