Senior Systems Administrator
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field required.
- 5+ years of progressive experience with systems administration, IT infrastructure, or related technology fields.
- Experience managing IP-based security systems.
- Strong understanding of IT infrastructure, networking, and cybersecurity practices.
- Experience with managing virtualized and physical server environments.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with facilities management, operations, and school-based staff.
- Demonstrated project management, problem-solving, and customer service skills.
- Industry certifications (e.g., CompTIA Security+, ASIS PSP) preferred.
- Ability to, and willingness to, occasionally work outside regular business hours.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the District may find appropriate and acceptable.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Comprehensive understanding of IT principles and proactive problem-solving skills.
- Ability to support, upgrade, and maintain servers and applications, including but not limited to designing, testing, backup processes, and schedules.
- Experience with virtualization platforms.
- Experience with vulnerability scanning and patching tools.
- Knowledge of backup solutions or equivalent systems.
- Proficiency with scripting (e.g., PowerShell).
- Proficiency with directory management.
- Proficiency with supporting MDM platforms across multiple OS platforms.
- Experience with device imaging, software, and application deployment across Windows, macOS, and Chrome OS environments, ensuring consistent configuration and lifecycle management.
- Strong understanding of cybersecurity principles, best practices, and compliance standards, with experience implementing security controls, monitoring systems, and responding to potential threats.
- Strong ethical standards and commitment to maintaining data confidentiality.
- Excellent documentation and customer service skills.
Reports To: Enterprise Services Manager
Supervises: Will provide direction to Systems Administrator(s) and technical support staff.
Job Goal(s):
The Senior Systems Administrator will work alongside the Enterprise Services Manager, Senior Systems and Network Administrators to design, integrate, and administer the district’s technology-based security and systems platforms. Together, they will ensure the secure, reliable, and efficient operation of systems, including cameras and other critical technology infrastructure. This position will focus on designated areas of responsibility, such as cybersecurity, physical security, systems management, and infrastructure administration, while maintaining cross-training and collaboration to ensure continuity of operations and consistent district-wide technology standards. The Senior Systems Administrator serves as a district expert in this domain, working closely with Technology staff, Facilities Management, Human Resources, and other district departments to support safe, secure, and effective learning environments.
Position Responsibilities:
- System Leadership & Administration
- Provide districtwide oversight for the design, procurement, installation, configuration, and lifecycle management of IP-based systems.
- Ensure integration of security platforms with Active Directory, Google SSO, and other enterprise systems.
- Manage system upgrades, patches, and configurations to maintain compliance with cybersecurity standards.
- Collaboration & Coordination
- Partner with Facilities Management on installation and maintenance requiring physical plant expertise.
- Work with Human Resources to implement role-based access controls and onboarding/offboarding workflows.
- Coordinate with Activities, Community Relations, and school-based administrators for livestreaming, video access requests, and legal responses.
- Support & Oversight
- Serve as an escalation point and back up for the Systems Administrator on troubleshooting and user support.
- Develop and maintain documentation, workflows, and training resources for Help Desk staff and end-users.
- Ensure timely response to fob replacements, camera access issues, and incident requests.
- Planning & Compliance
- Conduct system audits, maintain inventories, and oversee lifecycle replacement planning.
- Ensure compliance with district security policies, state/federal regulations, and industry best practices.
- Recommend system enhancements to improve safety, efficiency, and scalability.
- Strategic Leadership
- Provide input to district leadership on long-term security technology planning.
- Represent the Enterprise Services team in planning sessions and cross-departmental initiatives.
- Stay current on emerging technologies and recommend adoption where appropriate.

- Promote a culture of safety, service, and continuous improvement.
- Participate as a member of the District’s risk committee.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Enterprise Services Manager.
Terms of Employment:
Year-Round Position - Salary and calendar year to be evaluated in accordance with Board Policy of the Iowa City Community School District.
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the District’s policy on Evaluation, State Statute, and any applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
