Seattle Public Utilities is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Civil Engineering Associate within the Drainage and Wastewater (DWW) Line of Business’ System Operations, Planning, & Analysis (SOPA) Section. This position will join an experienced team that monitors and optimizes wastewater facilities throughout the City of Seattle. As a member of the SOPA Wastewater Operations team, you will focus on assessing the performance of 37 combined sewer overflow storage facilities such as the newly constructed Ship Canal storage tunnel, 82 NPDES sites, and 68 wastewater pump stations to implement operational improvements as needed.

Position Duties

  • Assess Performance: Evaluate real-time monitoring data at Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) storage facilities and wastewater pump stations. 
  • Operational Support: Provide operational support, especially during wet weather events, to SPU Operations Control Center (OCC) staff. 
  • Technical Analysis: Perform hydraulic calculations, investigate, and analyze facility performance. Review flow monitoring data and analyze trends. 
  • Documentation: Review Operations & Maintenance Manuals and update facility documentation in the Facility Manual SharePoint site. 
  • Project Involvement: Support cross branch teams during the planning, design, construction, and commissioning of wastewater capital projects.
  • Troubleshooting: Support post project performance monitoring and reporting for stabilization and optimization of new wastewater facilities.  
  • Support resolution of operational issues and preparation of documentation to implement improvements as needed.
  • Site Investigation and field verification.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Requires three (3) years’ civil engineering experience. 

Education: Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology.
    
Experience and Education Equivalency: 
Or other combinations of education and/or experience which provide preparation to do professional civil engineering work.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment. 
  • Field assignments may entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites. 
  • May be required to lift over 50 pounds. 
  • May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time. 
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as needed to provide 24/7 standby support on a rotational basis.
  • Overnight travel may be required.


License, Certification, and Other Requirements: Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.


Desired Qualifications: 

  • Understanding of flow and level data analysis.
  • Understanding of automated facilities, preferably drainage & wastewater facilities.
  • Experience interpreting design and as-built drawings.
  • Technical understanding of drainage & wastewater system hydraulics.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate openly, and coordinate efficiently, within a team environment. 
  • Proactive problem-solving ability.
  • Customer service oriented. 
  • Strong organization and documentation skills. 
  • Engineer-in-Training Certification.

Work Schedule: This position allows for the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Employees are required to come into the office three times a week. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are mandatory for employees in the Seattle Public Utilities Drainage & Wastewater Line of Business. 

The full salary range for this position is $60.15 - $70.20 per hour.
