Job Summary
The Machine Shop Supervisor will oversee daily operations of the machine shop, ensuring efficient workflow, high-quality output, and adherence to safety and productivity standards. This position is responsible for supervising machinists, operators, welders, and technical staff while coordinating with engineering and production teams to meet project timelines and product specifications. The ideal candidate has strong leadership skills, advanced machining knowledge, and a commitment to continuous improvement and team development.
Essential Functions

- Supervise, schedule, and coordinate the daily activities of machinists, CNC operators, welders, and other machine shop personnel.
- Monitor workload distribution to ensure optimal productivity and adherence to project deadlines.
- Train, coach, and mentor team members on best practices, machine operation, safety procedures, and quality standards.
- Oversee setup, programming, and operation of manual and CNC machines, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
- Review work orders, engineering drawings, and production schedules to prioritize tasks and allocate resources.
- Collaborate with engineering and quality assurance to ensure parts meet all technical and customer specifications.
- Ensure routine and preventive maintenance is performed on all machinery and equipment to minimize downtime.
- Identify and troubleshoot production issues, recommend process improvements, and implement corrective actions.
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment by enforcing company safety policies and procedures.
- Track and report shop performance metrics including throughput, downtime, quality, and on-time delivery.
- Evaluate employee performance and provide feedback and guidance to foster growth and accountability.
- Assist in hiring, onboarding, and training of new team members as needed.
- Maintain inventory of shop supplies, materials, and tooling; coordinate procurement with purchasing.
- Serve as the point of contact for cross-functional teams and communicate status updates effectively.

Experience and Skills
- 10+ years of experience in machining, including CNC and manual operations.
- Minimum 3+ years in a supervisory or lead machinist role in a machine shop environment.
- Extensive knowledge of machining processes, tooling, shop math, and metal properties.
- Proficient in interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications.
- Strong understanding of CNC programming, setup, and troubleshooting (e.g., Mastercam, G-code).
- Experience with a variety of machines including CNC lathes, mills, and grinders.
- Experience with non-metal materials such as G10 Fiberglass and polycarbonate materials a plus.
- Familiarity with welding and fabrication processes is a plus.
- Experience implementing and maintaining safety and quality control procedures.
- Experience working in ISO production environment in DOD workspace.
Education
- High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED)
- Technical Certification or Associate’s Degree preferred
