Dispatcher/Router  

Reports to: Director of Transportation 

Term: 52 weeks per year, 8 hours per day 

General Description  

The Dispatcher/Router is responsible for maintaining and operating school bus routes for all District students and buildings.  Coordinates and evaluates transportation needs for regular and special education students in order to produce safe and  efficient school bus route planning and scheduling. Acts as a transportation liaison and coordinates transportation needs  and information between parents/guardians, schools, and school bus drivers. 

Main Job Tasks and Responsibilities 

  • Develops and maintains all school bus routes, including any and all field trips, summer school and special  circumstances, etc., to ensure safe and efficient routes. 
  • Maintain office services which include answering and directing telephone calls and radio dispatch and incoming  visitors 
  • Assists transportation staff in handling necessary paperwork and communicating with district personnel ? Maintains records and logs of all driver activities in order to track daily routes assigned.  
  • Oversees extra-duty routes and assignments to ensure consistency with the MCCA/MCAS contract language and /  applicable district policies  
  • Provides to the Director of Transportation an analysis of routes and driver assignments to review for  possible consolidation and improvement 
  • Maintains log of auxiliary district vehicles including assignment to staff 
  • Liaison with other School Corporations when it pertains to transportation needs of students in specific  and special circumstances (i.e.: McKinney Vento, etc.) 
  • Provide assistance, as needed to the Office and Finance Manager with regards to Human Resources,  Finance and Payroll items 
  • Responsible for assigning transportation specific keys (i.e. bus keys, gate, etc.) and Corporation gas  cards 
  • Handles all incoming dispatch calls from Corporation school buses during normal work day ? Participate in department committees as necessary 
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation 

Education and Experience 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent 
  • Strong technology skills; ability to use basic office software and working knowledge with a commitment to become  an expert in transportation specific technology (i.e. Versatrans, GPS software, etc.) 
  • Knowledge of Power Schools and District software, preferred 
  • Previous experience working in a school transportation environment, preferred 
  • Basic understanding of transportation department operations 
  • Previous supervisory experience desired; supervisory experience in transportation department setting is preferred
  • Working knowledge of state laws and district policies and guidelines related to transportation ? Effective problem solving skills and ability to work on complex and often confidential problems requiring discretion  and sound, independent decision-making 
  • Strong customer service orientation and excellent verbal and written communication skills including maintaining a  professional behavior at all times while communicating and working with other department staff; district staff;  parents and community partners 
  • Excellent work habits and attendance record with a commitment to meet deadlines and to meet the needs of MCAS  students and staff 
  • Be proactive, attentive and responsive, as the situation deems
