Teacher of the Deaf – Elementary
Duties and Responsibilities
To provide instruction to deaf, hard-of-hearing, and/or language-delayed children in an elementary setting. Creates, with students, a community of learners where they feel respected and honored. Sets instructional objectives, designs and prepares lessons, and implements supportive activities that meet age-appropriate emotional, physical, and instructional needs. Communicates learning goals, high standards, and expected outcomes to students. Builds positive relationships with families and collaborates with colleagues to enhance each student’s learning experience.
Daily Expectations
- Establish an organized and engaging classroom environment that supports student learning and involvement.
- Communicate clearly with students in their identified language of instruction (ASL and/or English).
- Plan and deliver effective instruction using appropriate strategies for deaf and hard-of-hearing learners.
- Monitor student understanding and adjust instruction, materials, or assessments as needed.
- Maintain high standards of behavior, mutual respect, and safety in the classroom.
- Write annual IEP goals, track progress quarterly, and attend IEP meetings.
- Integrate and implement behavior plans for individual students.
- Collaborate with colleagues to plan interdisciplinary lessons and ensure consistent student support.
- Cooperate with parents and maintain positive communication regarding student progress.
- Maintain confidentiality of students, staff, and families; refrain from gossip.
- Use assessment data to guide instruction and document student progress.
- Participate in diagnostic meetings, professional development, and schoolwide activities.
- Maintain a professional appearance and conduct in alignment with RISD’s staff handbook.
- May occasionally assist with health care responsibilities delegated by the school nurse.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director or Curriculum Coordinator.
Job Requirements
- Eligible for Rhode Island Certification in the following areas:
1. Teacher of the Deaf
2. Elementary Education
3. Special Education (for certain positions)
- Degree in Deaf Education, Elementary Education, or related field.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum 2-4 years of relevant teaching experience preferred.
- Proficiency in American Sign Language required.
- Competence in written English.
- Highly qualified credentials as established by the RI Department of Education.
- Knowledge of Common Core Standards, RI Standards, and state testing procedures.
- Strong collaboration skills and commitment to team-based work.
- Respect for the cultural norms and language of the Deaf community.
- Excellent attendance and professional boundaries.
- Citizenship, residency, or work visa in the United States required.
- Background check and fingerprinting required.
Work Hours
8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with the possibility of additional hours during Extended School Year (ESY).
