A Glimpse of the Job
The primary responsibility of the Executive Director of Hospital Finance and Business Operations is to assist and advise the Associate Dean for Hospital Operations on financial, strategic, and business services for the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. The Executive Director of Hospital Finance and Business Operations provides strategic direction and overall hospital financial management. The Executive Director works closely with the Hospital Board of Directors and College and University financial leadership to ensures the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital’s resources are deployed in the most efficient manner possible to maximize the financial health, strategic initiatives, and future viability of the hospital while anticipating and minimizing internal and external risk to the teaching, research, and service missions of the hospital.
Essential Duties/Tasks
Leadership and Personnel Management
Responsibility for management, oversight, and planning of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital’s (VMTH) financial and operations
Hires, evaluates, and supervises finance staff within the finance team. Develops standard procedures for finance staff to follow and ensures best practices are followed to maintain consistency across all departments
Establishes key performance metrics to evaluate and measure performance of the finance team in the areas of customer satisfaction, productivity, efficiency, service quality, and service value
Monitors performance and takes action to ensure appropriate staffing and performance levels are maintained
Develop and implement strategic planning specific to financial organization within the Hospital
Participate as an active member of the Hospital leadership team
Represent the Associate Dean for Hospital Operations in their absence
Collaborate on making key administrative decisions in the VMTH
Serve on various Hospital, College, and University committees, as well act as the liaison from the Hospital to the University in key areas
Assist the Associate Dean in directing hospital administrative personnel and help provide leadership and vision for the administrative team and Hospital
Assist in development and assessment of Hospital metrics
Annual review of budgeted positions and financial implementation of market analysis for hospital personnel to maintain competitive salaries with specialty veterinary and human hospitals
Strategic management and planning for capital expenditures such as equipment and on-going service contracts
Data Reporting and Compliance
Responsible for the dissemination of information regarding financial and budgetary matters for the hospital
Ensure that programs, activities, and services comply with University, State, and Federal regulations and make recommendations for policies, regulations, rules, and compliance
Monitor the dynamics of the financial and administrative condition of the Hospital; formulate and implement necessary adjustments
Coordinates the preparation and administration of the annual Hospital operating budget and provide long-range budget planning expertise and strategies
Provide regular financial reports, analyses, and projections as needed to the Associate Dean, Hospital Board, Executive Committee, and Dean
Reconciles the University accounting system (FAMIS) with the Hospital accounting system (VMIS)
Financial Operations Management
Directs and manages the hospital financial and business operations. Approves purchases, reviews reconciliations, monitors financial conditions, and takes appropriate steps to implement corrective actions
Reviews and approves department financial documents requiring department head approval and signature authority as delegated. Liaises with college leadership to ensure the strategy is aligned with the organizational mission
Proposes solutions to complex financial, business, and personnel issues
Ensures the Hospital maintains at least 3 months of income to continue operations in the event of a major economic downturn
Responsible for ensuring hospital finances are able to support 365 annual operating days 24 hours a day including central receiving and purchasing support

Required Education and Experience and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience
Ten years of business finance experience or related
Preferred Qualifications
Ten years of experience in a hospital financial environment or ten years of related experience in an academic setting
Master’s degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Able to work independently and implement policies
Excellent communication skills, ability to train, develop and streamline processes
