General Summary
- The Oncology Nurse Coordinator assists the physician or mid-level provider by providing assessment, treatment, testing, and education for the patients of the oncology practice.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinates all facets of oncology and hematology treatment plans of care. Follows established oncology protocols to maintain a clean & safe working environment at all times.
- Ongoing evaluation of patient plan of care. Prepares patients for appointments by screening to determine nature of the visit and ensuring appropriate physical assessment data and test results are complete in the medical record. Initiates, reviews, and updates patient's medication and summary lists according to provider preference. Documents patient care in the medical record completely and accurately.
- Provides treatment/therapy plan medication dose verification(s) in conjunction with the provider. Assists with examinations and procedures as requested within scope of practice.
- Coordinates oncology and hematology care with internal and external ancillary services as relevant to patient’s plan of care. This includes, but is not limited to, supportive services, specialty pharmacies and other specialty providers/services. Acts as a counselor for patient and family.
- Is responsible for providing advice and education on all facets of oncology and hematology, to include preventative measures. Responsible for maintaining authorization of patient medications and procedures.
- Oversees sample medications and maintains quality logs. Performs safe administration of all medications according to hospital protocol. Assist in maintenance of crash cart. Maintains necessary medical supplies within department.
- Coordinates all inpatient and outpatient procedures and patient admissions. Ensures all instruments are sterile and ready for use for procedures. Accesses implanted ports as needed maintaining sterile procedure per hospital protocol.
- Works collectively with all DDCI care teams, maintaining safe and appropriate continuum of care. Documents treatments or observations as needed.
- Is responsible, in conjunction with the physician, for documenting information for investigational protocols and ensures that all appropriate investigational drug materials is understood by the patient.
- Maintains ongoing oncology education requirements as set forth by accrediting agencies.
- Meets commitments, works independently, accepts accountability, handles change, sets personal standards, stays focused under pressure, and meets attendance/punctuality requirements.
Education
- Graduate of an accredited RN program required.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing preferred.
Work Experience
- One-year health care experience preferred.
Certification/License
- Current RN license in the state of Missouri or Compact state required.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification required.
- OCN-Oncology Nursing Certification preferred.
Mental/Physical Requirements
- Considerable mental concentration required. Lifting up to 35 lbs., turning activities and nearly constant walking required. Standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.
Working Conditions
- Minimal physical discomfort. Frequent exposure to communicable disease via blood and body fluids. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, radiation and anti-neoplastic agents. Works with sharps and other potentially biohazardous material. Ability to function under stress.
