About the Department
The Department Head, Design Programs, reports directly to the Dean of Technology, Design & Public Safety. This position works in cooperation with the Dean of Technology, Design & Public Safety on the leadership and day-to-day functioning of the assigned programs. The goal is to ensure quality educational experiences for students through instruction, curriculum development, student advising, professional development, and community/industry engagement.
Position Duties
Personnel Management
- Recruit, interview, and recommend full-time/part-time hires with appropriate industry experience to the Dean.
- Submit hiring documents and verify faculty credentials.
- Support faculty in course planning, instructional delivery, and classroom management.
- Develop and manage semester course schedules and teaching assignments.
- Supervise and evaluate departmental faculty and classes, including classroom observations.
- Resolve student grievances as appropriate.
- Facilitate communication of departmental and College information.
- Advocate and provide motivation for faculty.
- Identify and support faculty professional development.
- Review, assess, and innovate curriculum/program offerings including implementation of emerging technologies.
- Recommend revisions to courses and program plans of study.
- Oversee course materials selection and ordering.
- Address and resolve departmental conflicts.
- Create and monitor faculty Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs) when needed.
- Ensure compliance with accreditation, certification, and NCCCS standards.
- Build and maintain community/industry partnerships.
- Establish and manage diverse program advisory committees.
- Track and resolve KACE tickets, communicating needs to the Dean.
- Maintain departmental program handbook.
- Plan open houses, tours and portfolio viewings.
- Recruit qualified judges for program competencies.
- Recommend annual budgetary needs for personnel, equipment, supplies, and facilities.
- Manage departmental budget and monitor expenditures.
- Facilitate all e-procurements for departmental resources.
- Implement inventory control methods.
- Teach all assigned courses, for the full duration of scheduled instruction.
- Develop Workforce Development and Continuing Education (WCE) programming for Interior Design and Graphic Design.
- Ensure all classes meet curricular standards and maintain instructional quality.
- Evaluate student progress and provide timely feedback.
- Integrate emerging technologies to enhance student learning.
- Provide and facilitate quality lab and work-based learning experiences.
- Maintain clean and safe instructional areas/labs.
- Ensure classroom/lab equipment functionality and report issues.
- Maintain at least 3 weekly office hours and 3 weekly advising hours.
- Advise students on academic and career planning.
- Support semester advising and registration.
- Complete and verify graduation degree audits.
- Assist in the recruitment and retention initiatives.
- Advocate and provide motivation for students.
- Submits instructional records, grades, and reports accurately and on time.
- Remain current in discipline and pedagogy through professional development.
- Participate in departmental, divisional, and institutional meetings and events.
- Maintain positive communication and collaboration across College units.
- Maintain posted office and on-campus hours sufficient to fulfill all contracted duties and individual professional obligations, as well as to meet the needs of the department, division, and College.
Minimum Qualifications
Required:
- Associate’s degree in interior design/interior architecture, or graphic design, or another design-related field.
- Minimum of three years’ teaching experience (traditional classroom and/or online) at community college level or other institution of higher learning.
- Documented experience in creating, editing, and maintaining social media, and design blogs for marketing and student portfolio uploads.
- Managing inter/trans-disciplinary design projects across Graphic Design, Photography, and Interior Design.
- Minimum of five years’ professional work experience in the field of interior design or graphic design.
- Knowledge of and ability to apply sound business practices within Design Programs.
- Bachelor’s degree in interior design/interior architecture, or graphic design, or another design-related field.
- At least one year of supervisory experience.
- Membership in professional organizations (ASID, IIDA, IDS, IDEC or AIGA)
- Professional certifications (NCIDQ, CQRID, LEED/LEED AP, GREEN Leader, AutoCAD certified instructor, Adobe Certified Instructor)
- Minimum of two years of online teaching experience using Learning Management System (LMS)
- Active professional presence on LinkedIn presence
