SUMMARY:

The Nursing Academic Advising Specialist provides high-level academic guidance and strategic support for undergraduate nursing students enrolled in both traditional and competency-based programs. This position plays a critical role in customer service towards student retention and academic success through individualized planning, policy interpretation, and data-informed decision-making. Utilizes established degree plans to assist students to efficiently and successfully graduate.  Answers student questions and assists with individual student support service needs.  The Nursing Academic Advising Specialist also connects students with East Texas A&M University post-graduation auxiliary services such as the Alumni Office and Career Development.  Primary work location is Commerce/possible remote.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides comprehensive, individualized academic advising to undergraduate nursing students, using knowledge of nursing curricula, university policies, and licensure requirements.
  • Evaluates student academic records, petitions, and progression issues, and makes independent decisions on academic standing, probation, and appeals within university policy.
  • Collaborates in the design and implementation of retention strategies with the College of Nursing leadership, including early alerts, intervention plans, and data analysis.
  • Serves as a subject-matter expert on academic advising within the nursing program and contributes to university-wide advising initiatives.
  • Reviews and updates degree plans based on curricular changes and accreditation standards.
  • Participates in academic policy development related to advising, progression, and student support within the nursing program.
  • Answer student questions and assist with individual student support service needs.
  • Meet, refer, and follow-up with Nursing students regarding their needs and concerns.
  • Partners with Career Services, Alumni Relations, and to connect students with post-graduation auxiliary services.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience / Knowledge / Skills: Four years of related experience in customer or student services. Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Ability to: Multi-task and work well as part of a team.  Ability to process sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
  • Licensing/Professional Certifications: None
  • Physical Requirements: None
  • Other Requirements: May occasionally require work outside normal business hours such as evenings or weekends.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:

Higher education experience.  Experience with Student Information Systems, degree planning and degree audits.  Customer service training or certifications.

SUPERVISION OF OTHERS:

May assist to supervise graduate assistants or student workers.
