
Job Title: School Bus Mechanic
Reports to: Director of Transportation
Received Guidance From: Director of Transportation, Assistant Director of Transportation
Overtime Status: Compliant with position, salary, and FLSA regulations
Job Purpose:
Under general supervision of the Director of Transportation (Director), to provide preventative, diagnostic, and repair service and maintenance to vehicles owned and operated by the Lamar County School District in an effort to maintain safe operation of each vehicle and support the educational goals of the district. This includes school buses and district vehicles with both diesel and gasoline engines.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Depending on the assignment, duties may include but are not limited to the following: Perform and diagnose the repairs of district school buses.
Assist lead mechanic in maintenance of parts and fuel inventory.
Assist lead mechanic in establishing a system of routine maintenance automotive maintenance and preventative care.
Maintain detailed records and files of maintenance and repairs for each district-owned vehicle.
Maintain compliance with all Federal, State, and local maintenance regulations.
Report all safety issues to lead mechanic and address them accordingly
Display proper use of tools and shop equipment including but not limited to: screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, sockets, welding torch, pressure gauges, torque wrench, jacks, and air compressor controlled tools.
Properly and safely install and maintain brake components
Properly and safely perform routine maintenance of school buses
Properly inspect and change tires
Properly fuel and inspect district vehicles for any fault or defect that may hinder proper operation
Properly use testing and diagnostic equipment, as well as test driving as part of diagnosis
Perform additional maintenance duties as deemed necessary by the lead mechanic and transportation director.
Regular, timely/dependable, in person attendance is an essential function of this position
Perform such other and not specifically enumerated duties as may be requested by the Board of Education, superintendent, administrator, director or established by district policy, state, or federal guidelines
- Read, understand, and abide by Employee Conduct Policy, all other district policies and applicable procedures and protocols as established by LCSD, and Mississippi Educator Code of Conduct
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
At least 2 years experience working in a shop with commercial diesel and gas engines
A high school diploma or equivalent training and qualifications
Valid Class B CDL (or higher) with P (Passenger) and S (School Bus) endorsements
Proficiency in repair and preventive maintenance of school buses and other automotive equipment, including both gasoline and diesel engines
Two years of mechanic experience
Ability to communicate in a professional and courteous manner
Any alternatives to the above that the LCSD School Board deems appropriate
Training and Experience:
Any combination of training, education, and experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge and abilities stated above and the ability to perform the duties of the position.
