What you’ll do: You’ll directly supervise designated employees. You’ll also be responsible for the coordination of mail services for the facility in compliance with Management & Training Corporation (MTC) and Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) directives.
Essential Functions:
- Perform administrative duties necessary to ensure the processing of all Inmate correspondence in compliance with correspondence rules.
- Coordinate the work of mail room workers; establish work schedules and duties and provides on-the- job training for mailroom workers.
- Review incoming books intended for Inmate receipt; inspects general Inmate correspondence, publications and packages; and maintains all records and files pertinent to processing Inmate correspondence and mailroom activities.
- Interpret correspondence rules and obtain information on proper procedures for handling Inmate correspondence.
- Prepare various forms related to the processing of Inmate correspondence and mail room functions.
- Respond to Inmate questions, complaints and/or requests pertaining to their correspondence.
- Ensure Inmates do not handle other Inmate’s correspondence.
- Regular and predictable attendance required.
- Promote the development of positive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed; provide regular feedback to staff regarding social skills procedures and intervention techniques.
- Maintain accountability of staff, Inmates and property; adhere to safety practices.
It is expected the incumbent will perform other duties as assigned within his/her scope of work determined by management.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Graduation from an accredited senior high school or equivalent or GED. Three (3) years full-time, wage- earning mailroom operations experience. ---OR--Four (4) years full-time, wage-earning correctional unit operations experience.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.
Post Hire Requirements: Must complete Correctional Awareness Training (CAT) prior to Inmate contact. Must successfully complete annual in-service training requirements and pass an annual background check, both of which must be approved by TDCJ.
