Position Summary:
The Senior GL Accountant will play a crucial role in creating and maintaining accurate and compliant financial documents for the company. This role requires a deep understanding of accounting principles, particularly within the new home construction industry, and a commitment to continuous improvement. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively with various departments.
Key Responsibilities:
- General Ledger:
- Prepare and post journal entries, including accruals, deferrals, reclassifications, and cash transactions.
- Review and analyze general ledger accounts to ensure the accuracy of financial information.
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, as assigned, ensuring accuracy and compliance with company policies and GAAP standards.
- Perform comprehensive bank reconciliations for multiple accounts held at various banking institutions.
- Assist with investigating budget variances and providing explanations to management.
- Cross train and serve as a back-up for Senior Job Cost Accountant.
- Support external audits by providing documentation and explanations related to revenue transactions and other accounts, as assigned.
- Construction Accounting:
- Complete review of final closing statement (HUD/ALTA), and review of job cost summaries. Review for accuracy and provide variance explanations to projected results.
- Reconcile construction loan accounts held at various banking institutions.
- Maintain commission draw balances and process payroll submission for commissions/bonuses earned as well as draws.
- Analyze revenue trends, prepare financial reports, and assist with management reporting and dashboards.
- Internal Controls and Compliance:
- Assist in the development and implementation of accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Support internal and external audits by providing necessary documentation and explanations.
- Identify areas for process improvement and work with management to implement changes.
- Other:
- Prepare monthly related party rebills for payroll and benefits.
- Review accounts payable payment registers to ensure accuracy, compliance with Net 30 terms, and adherence to internal procedures.
- Other tasks as assigned.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with project managers, procurement, and other departments to ensure accurate financial reporting and cost management.
- Provide training and support to junior accounting staff as needed.
- Communicate effectively with other departments, title and mortgage companies, external auditors, and other third-party stakeholders.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
- CPA and/or public accounting experience a plus but not required.
- 4-6 years of relevant accounting experience, with revenue recognition experience in construction or homebuilding, strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and construction accounting principles, including job costing and percentage of completion.
- Experience in accounting software, such as Sage, Timberline, Newstar, JD Edwards, etc. or other industry-specific platforms.
- Advanced excel skills; ability to work with large datasets, pivot tables, and financial models.
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work cross-functionally.
