About the Department
The Teen Supervisor is responsible for the overall planning and implementation of system wide programming and services for teens ages 13-18 at the ten locations of the Forsyth County Public Library as well as the day-to-day management and operation of the Teen Central department at the Central Library. The successful candidate will serve on the Youth Services Committee as a resource for the Youth Services librarians representing the nine branch libraries and be the liaison on numerous community initiatives involving teens. This person will select books and AV materials for teens system wide and work regularly with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools to promote public library services to teens.
In addition to Supervising and programming within their own department, this position guides other Youth Services librarians in the system in the development of teen programs and initiatives. They co-lead the Youth Services committee together with the Children’s Library supervisor and promote and advocate for the needs of teen library users on other committees.
Position Duties
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of library science.
- Thorough knowledge of cataloging, acquisitions, and other specialized professional library work.
- Thorough knowledge of current literature, trends, and developments in the field of library science and administration appropriate to the area of specialization.
- Thorough knowledge of general community needs and interests in relation to library services in the area of specialization.
- Thorough knowledge of the policies and procedures of the library.
- Ability to plan and schedule work for a section.
- Ability to train, supervise, and evaluate the work of others.
- Ability to analyze problems and to recommend practical solutions.
- Ability to use consistently good judgment in the daily supervision of services.
- Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
- Ability to express ideas effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
Minimum Qualifications
Master of library science degree from an ALA accredited library school and at least three years experience in professional library work. Supervisory experience preferred. Must obtain certification of the North Carolina Public Librarian Certification Commission. A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.
Other Qualifications
- Supervises the daily operation of library services for an assigned section.
- Conducts performance appraisals, assigns and reviews work, participates in recruitment and selection activities, schedules staff, conducts staff meetings and provides training.
- Responsible for collection development and maintenance in assigned unit.
- Responsible for ongoing planning for section to include goals and objectives, five-year plan and departmental budget.
- Answers reference/research/directional questions using a wide variety of sources.
- Advises staff on where to find the answer to difficult reference questions.
- Resolves complaints from patrons and acts as liaison between the library and the community.
- Develops and implements special programs that enhance service.
- May work in providing publicity for library services.
- Prepares special studies and statistical reports.
- Performs related work as required.
- Maintaining a specific license such as a driver's license in good standing, without a lapse or loss of a privilege to drive in compliance with North Carolina law, and in compliance with applicable DOT standards for commercial motor vehicle drivers if required to perform the duties assigned to the position.
