Job Summary
The CT Technologist performs high-quality computed tomography (CT) examinations in accordance with physician orders and departmental protocols. This position is responsible for ensuring optimal image quality while maintaining patient safety and comfort. The technologist works closely with radiologists, nurses, and other clinical staff to provide timely diagnostic imaging that supports effective patient care.
Essential Functions
- Perform CT scans according to established protocols, ensuring proper patient positioning, technique, and image quality.
- Review physician orders and patient histories to verify clinical appropriateness and exam accuracy.
- Administer intravenous contrast material safely under established protocols, observing for adverse reactions.
- Utilize independent judgment and technical expertise to modify imaging parameters based on patient condition or anatomy.
- Operate CT scanners and associated equipment, maintaining compliance with all manufacturers and ACR standards.
- Accurately document patient and exam data in PACS, EMR, and RIS systems.
- Adhere to radiation safety principles (ALARA) and ensure protective measures for patients and staff.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, including daily equipment checks and room readiness.
- Communicate effectively with radiologists regarding exam findings, quality issues, or procedural concerns.
- Respond promptly to emergency, trauma, and STAT imaging requests, providing coverage as assigned.
- Assist with scheduling coordination, patient transport, and preparation as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA and hospital policies.
Additional Responsibilities
- Participate in department quality assurance programs, including protocol review and image audits.
- Support continuing education and cross-training within other modalities when needed.
- Serve as a resource for new technologists, students, or trainees during orientation and practical instruction.
- Assist leadership with maintaining supply inventory and reporting equipment malfunctions promptly.
- Contribute to quality improvement initiatives that enhance workflow and patient satisfaction.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned by the Radiology Director.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology Program.
- Certification/Licensure:
- ARRT (R) certification required.
- Advanced ARRT (CT) certification required or obtained within 12 months of hire.
- New Mexico State Radiologic Technologist license (active and in good standing).
- Current BLS certification.
- Training: Must complete annual continuing education (CEU) requirements and maintain compliance with all ACR and state regulations.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
- Proficient knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy, CT physics, and image reconstruction techniques.
- Strong understanding of radiation safety, contrast media administration, and dose optimization protocols.
- Competence in the use of CT scanner software, PACS, EMR, and RIS systems.
- Excellent communication and patient care skills for interaction with individuals of all ages and backgrounds.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and perform effectively in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and commitment to quality imaging outcomes.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated professionalism and adaptability to changing departmental needs.
Environmental & Physical Requirements
- Frequent patient contact with potential exposure to infectious materials and bodily fluids.
- Must be able to stand, walk, and assist patients throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift, move, or position patients and imaging equipment up to 50 pounds.
Must be available for rotating shifts, on-call coverage, weekends, and holidays as assigned
