JOB SUMMARY: In the role as the primary clinicians in the Support, Training, and Respite (STAR) the STAR Trainer will have a variety of potential responsibilities related to guiding, educating, and consulting with parents of children with developmental disabilities. In group sessions, the Trainer will educate families about topics relevant to children with developmental disabilities, facilitate supportive discussions, and provide training on behavioral methods for addressing challenging behaviors and teaching adaptive skills. For families who elect to pursue additional support, the Professional will conduct behavioral assessment procedures in home/community settings, develop strategies for addressing challenging behavior based on assessment results, and train family members/caregivers in the use of those strategies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: STAR Trainer must be able to consistently and successfully perform all essential functions of the position.
Ensures that the individuals supported are provided person centered programming and are encouraged and supported in making their own decisions to the greatest extent possible
- Ensure that individuals are offered the opportunity to choose activities and experiences that are aligned with the individual’s valued outcomes.
- Ensure that individuals are encouraged to self-advocate.
Ensures that individuals are offered opportunities to participate in their community to the greatest extent possible and in the most integrated setting appropriate to their needs
- Assist in planning and implementing community-based activities, where applicable.
- Assist in the development of activities that support and encourage community integration, where applicable.
- Seek assistance from behavior or other clinical support when necessary to provide community integration for each individual to the greatest extent possible in the most integrated setting appropriate to their needs.
Provide/facilitate parent education, support, and training
- Assist with delivery of specific training curriculum for families
- Prepare materials as needed (i.e. token system, picture schedule)
- Develop and implement methods to evaluate the parents’ acquisition of specific parenting skills
- Ensure that parents are capable of implementing treatment procedures
Provide behavioral support to families on-site and/or in the home/community under the supervision of the Family Support Services Coordinator and/or in consultation with Behavioral Support staff and supervisors.
- Assist families in the functional assessment of challenging behaviors
- Assist in the development of behavior support plans and/or lesson plans with families for use in the home
- Help guide the implementation of appropriate strategies and techniques to decrease maladaptive behaviors while increasing appropriate behaviors
- Assist families in developing reliable methods to track individual progress
- Assist families with the interpretation of data
- Help develop programs to help families assess and teach adaptive and self-help skills (e.g., toileting, dressing, hand washing, recreational skills, etc.)
- Accompany parent and child in home and/or community settings to assist in implementation of developed procedures
- Evaluate effectiveness of parent implementation of developed procedures and learned techniques for teaching skills and/or decreasing maladaptive behaviors.
Complies with agency Incident Reporting Policies and Procedures
- Follows agency policies and procedures regarding reporting incidents of injury, abuse or neglect of individuals in his/her care.
Manages behavioral challenges of individuals served
- Implements on-site respite program behavioral support plans/intensive respite plans and document daily behavioral data.
- Follow SCIP-R and Ukeru guidelines when implementing a personal intervention technique.
- Documents personal intervention techniques where appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of position skill and/or ability required.
- EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s Degree in psychology, behavior analysis, education, or a related field or 5 years of experience in direct clinical or educational experience with children or adults with developmental disabilities, which must include experience in a behavioral support role. Must demonstrate knowledge and competencies in applied behavior analysis, including (but not limited to) understanding definitions and characteristics, legal and ethical standards, behavior analytic concepts and principles, behavioral assessment and intervention, and evaluating progress.
- CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION: A valid NYS Driver’s License and agency approval of driving record according to agency's Policy and Procedures, OR accessibility to public or other private transportation. Must be CPR, First Aid, and SCIP-R certified (agency will provide training).
