The American Family Insurance Institute for Corporate and Social Impact ("the Institute") is seeking a current student to work as a Venture Capital Intern beginning summer 2026, with a late May or early June start date. The Institute is a social impact corporate venture capital (CVC) fund investing in early-stage, for-profit startups in the areas of Home Resilience, Access to Housing, and AI for Social Good. Under direction and guidance from the investing team, the intern will be responsible for researching, identifying, establishing connections, and performing due diligence on investment opportunities that meet the Institute's investment criteria. The intern may also be tasked with other relevant projects that support the Institute's goals in social impact venture capital. He or she will complete tasks using both interpersonal and technical skills appropriate to the specific job assignment while adapting to new or changing situations in a mostly virtual team environment.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Contribute to thesis development in one of our three core investment areas:

    • Home Resilience: supporting advancements that enhance durability, efficiency, and adaptability in electrification, energy, and weatherization

    • Access to Housing: solutions that make housing more affordable, accessible, and sustainable, including innovations in mortgage readiness, housing stock, and aging in place.

    • AI for Social Good: supporting initiatives that harness ethical AI to drive impact, ensuring its benefits are accessible to everyone while mitigating the risks it poses.

  • Research and evaluate market opportunities for startup investment matching our investment areas

  • Learn more about the venture capital deal flow process and contribute to sourcing startups that have the potential for a strong financial return, maintain a social impact mission, and are aligned with AFI's strategic plan

  • Assist in the startup due diligence process through evaluating term sheets, writing sections of investment memos, and meeting with founders and investors.

  • Participate in weekly Institute team meetings and other meetings as assigned.

  • Present your work to the Institute team at regular intervals.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Specialized Knowledge & Skills Requirements

  • Working knowledge of venture capital, social impact measurement, and/or entrepreneurship.

  • Previous experience working for a startup or venture capital fund a plus but not a requirement.

  • Must be currently seeking a baccalaureate, masters, or doctoral degree and be enrolled in an accredited college or university on a full-time basis or as required by the university's co-op program.

  • Must have achieved 24 semester hours of academic credit before beginning the first work term.

Education

  • Must be in pursuit of a post-secondary degree or certificate during the semester of internship.

  • Pursuing post-secondary education in a related major to the internship.

  • Strong preference for a student in a graduate degree program but will consider an outstanding incoming junior or senior undergraduate with relevant experience.

Travel Requirements

  • Up to 10%, depending on location.

Physical Requirements

  • Work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
