GENERAL SUMMARY

The staff RN will provide and coordinate infusion services activities to assure compassionate patient care. Provides direct patient care in compliance with professional practice and clinic standards. The RN will also promote a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach towards patients, families and all members of the care delivery team. The RN directs and oversees the care of other caregivers (nurses and non-nurses) via delegation, coordination, supervision, validation, and evaluation.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.    Performs assessment and data collection in an ongoing and systematic manner, focusing on the patient’s physiologic and cognitive status.

2.    Formulates and individualizes a patient plan of care consistently and effectively evaluates plan of care by utilization of and adherence to standards, which define the structure, process, and desired patient outcomes of nursing process.

3.    Demonstrates applied knowledge base in areas of patient care resources/references, policies, protocols, pertinent drugs, standards of care, and significant lab values.

4.    Administers intravenous (IV) infusions, consisting of chemotherapy, antibiotics, blood transfusions, etc, through peripherally inserted central catheters, peripheral IV or implanted venous access device. 

5.    Performs other nursing duties as ordered by physicians, such as catheter care, bladder scanning, intramuscular and subcutaneous injections, and therapeutic phlebotomy.

6.    Identifies patient learning needs and readiness for learning.  Implements patient/significant other instruction to meet self-care needs as defined in patient teaching protocols. 

7.    Performs documentation responsibilities following all existing policies, protocols and guidelines used in the Division of Nursing and those specific to Infusion Center.
 
8.    Functions with an awareness of and adherence to safety requirements as identified in existing standards. 

9.    Performs efficiently in emergency patient situations following established protocols, remaining calm, informing appropriate persons, and documenting events. 

10.    Demonstrates an awareness of self-responsibility and accountability for own professional practice within the Illinois Nurse Practice Act.

11.    Participates actively in staff development activities by sharing knowledge with others and using appropriate teaching/learning strategies to assist peers. 

12.    Demonstrates self-directed learning and participation in continuing education to meet own professional development.

13.    Seeks validation of knowledge base, skill level, and decision making as necessary and assertively requests guidance in areas of question.

14.    Demonstrates awareness of legal issues in all aspects of professional practice and patient care and strives to manage situations in a reduced-risk manner using appropriate lines of authority in clinical and operational matter. 

15.    Participates in development and attainment of unit and department of nursing goals and performance improvement activities. 

16.    Demonstrates willingness and ability to effectively coordinate patient care/unit activities among nursing staff, physicians, and support services, as needed.

17.    Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills and always attempting to receive and give information in a timely, concise, clear and positive manner.

18.    Formulates and uses effective working relationships with all health care team members, patients, and families. 

19.    Remains flexible in staffing patterns and willingly cross trains to CardioPulmonary Rehab Clinic; serving as a resource to meet the staffing needs of Outpatient Clinic, CardioPulmonary Rehab Clinic or Oncology Clinic.

20.    Demonstrates advanced level problem-solving skills, organizational skills and decision making abilities. 

21.    Performs other duties as assigned.
 

Qualifications


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1.    Excellent visual, hearing, speech/articulation abilities. 

2.    Physical strength to perform the following lifting tasks:

•    Floor to waist - 40 pounds
•    14” to waist - 50 pounds
•    Waist to shoulder - 20 pounds
•    Shoulder to overhead - 10 pounds
•    Carry 40 pounds for 30 feet
•    Push 40 pounds/force for 30 feet
•    Pull 40 pounds/force for 10 feet

3.    Emotional stability to deal with high prolonged stress of staff teamwork, patient care, and physical environment plus positively interacting with medical staff and support services during times of stress and constant change. 

4.    Excellent verbal and written skills for high level communication within the division of nursing.

5.    Strong intellectual abilities of critical thinking, comparative analysis, statistical control application, and decision making.


REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

     Reports to the Director of the Infusion Center

 
EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

1.    Current unrestricted Illinois Registered Nurse license.

2.    Telemetry Certification via approved On-line course or live course within 60 days of hire or current ACLS certification can also be used a proof of Telemetry Competency.

3.    Chemotherapy provider card to be obtained within six months of hire.

4.    BLS on hire, ACLS to be obtained within six months of hire.

INFECTION EXPOSURE RISK LEVEL 

Category 1 - Maximal Risk – this job exposes you to potential blood, body fluids, and tissues on a routine basis. It is recommended that you get the Hepatitis B vaccine.      


        
WORKING CONDITIONS

1.    Works in patient care areas where there are few discomforts due to dust, dirt, noise and the like. 

2.    Works with patients and may be exposed to contagious diseases or infectious materials, but potential for personal harm and injury is limited when proper safety and health precautions and equipment are used.
