DEPARTMENT:        Botanic Gardens

SUPERVISOR:           Paul Smith Children’s Village Manager

SALARY:                    $15.45-$18.54 Per Hour

 

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION                                                                                                  


Assists with gardening tasks throughout the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens. Tends plants in the conservatory, production greenhouse, and on the grounds on a regular basis.  Serves as staff at the Paul Smith Children’s Village every Sunday afternoon on a seasonal basis. Serves as back up staff for the Tilted Tulip Gift Shop, the Botanic Garden Welcome Desk and Events.


 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES                                                                              

 

  • Serves as primary staff on duty in the Paul Smith Children’s Village each Sunday June through August. Opens and closes the Children’s Village, monitors, and maintains the area for safety and cleanliness, and waters and fertilizes container plants.
  • Plants annuals, perennials, and woody plants in gardens and displays.
  • Waters plants in the Children’s Village, production greenhouse, conservatory, bedding plant hardening off area, container plantings, orangerie, and on the grounds.
  • Mixes and applies fertilizer as directed in the course of watering.
  • Pulls weeds and applies herbicides to kill weeds.
  • Work harmoniously with staff, volunteers and interns from all backgrounds, identities and ages, orientation, and abilities.
  • Maintain a safe environment for the Botanic Gardens staff, volunteers, and visitors.

 

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES                                                                                                               

 

  • Assist with the breakdown and storage of furnishings at the conclusion of events.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES                                                                            

 

  • Knowledge of gardening practices.
  • Knowledge of weed control techniques.
  • Knowledge and ability to use technology including basic computer skills and word processing software.
  • Strong communication skills with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to be organized, creative, and effective when priorities change rapidly due to changing conditions.
  • Ability to work independently and to exercise reasonable judgment in decision making with minimal supervision.

 

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB                                                                               

 

Required:

High School diploma or equivalent. Possession of a Driver’s License and the ability to drive.




Preferred:




Some post-secondary coursework in horticulture, botany, or plant science.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS                                                                                         


The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain the physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 45 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities.


Working Environment:

Work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environmental conditions; cold, warm, humid, hot air may regularly occur; exposure to radiant energy and inclement weather; exposure to cleaning solutions, fertilizers, agricultural chemicals, and pest control agents. Work may take place in outdoor environments in different seasons.
