Job Description:
The Specialty Instructor supports the programmatic needs of the Respite program locations by providing instruction and oversight for one of the following specialty areas: Yoga, Fitness, or Music. They will work closely with the coordinators to design and implement the curriculum for their assigned area including developing lesson plans for each day, well in advance. Specialty areas are included in Respite programming in order to enhance the quality of life for the individuals supported, as well as to provide a creative outlet for expression.
Responsibilities include:
- Comply with all OPWDD and New York State Justice Center Regulations.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals within the program.
- Encourage individuals to develop and maintain positive attitudes and behaviors.
- Enhance the quality of life for individuals attending the Respite program.
- Supervise the instruction of all individuals while following activities within the daily programming.
- Participate in supervising individuals during all meals falling in assigned hours of duty.
- Participate in personal hygiene tasks with individuals when necessary.
- Ensure that all activities are person-centered, age-appropriate, and developed with consideration for individual differences.
- Assist with daily arrival and departure routine as needed.
- Be an integral member of the interdisciplinary team.
- Conduct assessments of newly admitted individuals and continually assess their needs in the program.
- Maintain ongoing written and verbal communication with the Coordinator(s), Assistant Director/Director, Parents, Care Coordinators, and other service providers under the supervision of the Assistant Director/Director
- Respond politely and professionally to individuals, parents, co-workers, other professionals, and management.
- Assist in quarterly planning meetings with Coordinators and individuals to determine person-centered activities.
- Develop and submit quarterly supply budgets for specialty area needs.
- Report/document progress or lack of progress to appropriate parties.
- Provide input and feedback regarding program and activities.
- Attend all in-services/workshops and attain certifications as necessary including, but not limited to, AMAP, CPR, First Aid, and SCIP-R techniques. Be attentive at in-services/workshops.
- Attend all scheduled agency meetings/trainings.
- Administer medication, as assigned, once AMAP certified.
- Maintain and properly care for all program supplies. Report damage to or shortage of supplies. Ensure that program areas are kept in order.
- Inform supervisors in advance, of any absences or lateness so that appropriate coverage can be arranged.
- Respond promptly and appropriately in emergency situations.
- Assume additional responsibilities when assigned for the safety of the program and quality of care for all the individuals.
- Carry out any other responsibilities concerning programming and safety deemed necessary by supervisors.
Qualifications and Reports to:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Able to provide instruction in assigned specialty area.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Able to quickly recognize changes, symptoms, or other problems related to an individual’s condition, determine the
- appropriate intervention, and take the necessary action.
- Self-directed and motivated to function independently, completing tasks promptly yet remaining flexible to individuals’ needs.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma/GED
- At least one (1) year experience working with individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities
- Valid driver’s license preferred
