GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Provides technical and specialized skills in the operation of ultrasound procedures on Cherokee Nation patients.
Duties and responsibilities are conducted in a manner that effectively supports efficient patient services. Ensures
a safe environment for patients and peers. Practices ultrasound safety using "as low as (is) reasonably achievable"
(ALARA) concepts. Performs procedures as prescribed by Cherokee Nation providers. Communicates and works
with radiologists, physicists, clinicians, nursing staff, and other patient care providers to ensure high-quality
diagnostic procedures are performed. Provides training, education, and mentoring to students, technologists,
nursing faculty, and others only within the boundaries of competence, based on documented education,
training, supervised experience, state and national professional credentials, and appropriate professional
experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Routine duties shall include providing health care services to individuals eligible for services in accordance
with the self-governance compact and funding agreement between the Cherokee Nation and the United
States executed under the authority of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act.
• Practices only within the boundaries of competence, based on documented education, training, supervised
experience, state and national professional credentials, and appropriate professional experience.
• Provides health services of a scope, quality, and quantity consistent with the Cherokee Nation policies.
• Performs studies/procedures as outlined in the Cherokee Nation Policy and Procedures including routine
and immediate care.
• Applies principles of ultrasound in the execution of imaging requirements while ensuring quality assurance
activities on technical equipment and collaborating with appropriate parties to resolve image quality issues.
• Enters data accurately into the computer system(s) and ensures completeness of patient paperwork. Assures
all necessary patient documentation is complete and accurate by clearly writing the required information
on all necessary forms.
• Demonstrates flexibility to the demands of patient care by coming in early and /or staying late.
• Practices responsible use of communication tools (paging system, telephones, e-mail, fax, etc.), corrects
problems as they arise and notifies supervisor/manager when assistance is required to do so.
• Ensures completion of all duties, accurately demonstrates anatomy and pathology through proper
diagnostic scanning, uses proper scanning techniques, annotation, anatomical and pathological
demonstration, and corrects any errors.
• Maintains working knowledge of all ultrasound equipment used in the department including protocols,
procedures, and disease processes performed in ultrasound.
• Interprets orders such as patient requisition; including special instructions.
• Ensures the patient is imaged in a safe environment, free of hazards and identifies patients using approved
identifiers.
• Provides full attention to the patient and the procedure, addressing and handling patient care concerns,
and seeking opportunities to assist in overall patient care activities.
• Images patients utilizing approved protocols/procedures, sterile or aseptic technique where applicable, and
brings questions forward before imaging patients. Protects patients by following "as low as (is) reasonably
achievable" (ALARA) safety guidelines.

• Exhibits professional and courteous customer service at all times and demonstrates knowledge of AgeSpecific Criteria in carrying out work duties and tasks.
• Recognizes examination findings that may require an immediate clinical response and notifies the
interpreting radiologist (i.e. requesting a Stat Read). Discusses ultrasound findings with the radiologist and
uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures based on diagnostic information
received.
• Recognizes patient's distress signs, initiates and follows emergency procedures.
• Maintains continuing education requirements for licensure(s) and certification(s) and follows departmentspecific policies, procedures, guidelines, and protocols.
• Demonstrates adherence to accreditation standards, ethics, initiatives and applicable state/federal licensure
and guidelines.
• Attends mandatory in-services, regularly scheduled department meetings, and maintains expectations for
safety preparedness including but not limited to: Orientation to new equipment, Employee Education Event,
and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training, etc.
• Documents incidents, variances, unusual circumstances or patients' concerns during the procedures and
notifies the radiologist or supervisor as needed.
• Participates in quality and performance improvement activities, identifies new ways to improve workflows
and the patient experience.
• Manages patient flow effectively and minimizes delays by utilizing critical thinking to analyze and evaluate
simple cause and effect outcomes.
• Takes appropriate action to categorize problems into high and low priority levels and exercises appropriate
action to maintain efficiencies.
• Ensures appropriate inventory and supplies are available throughout each day/week for procedures.
• Relays all equipment malfunctions to the appropriate team and supervisor with appropriate information
readily available. During system failure, performs department downtime procedures and immediately
reports failure to the supervisor.
• Reports to the assigned work area on time and maintains his/her presence in the area and provides needed
support to maximize department productivity.
• Uses knowledge of area-specific processes, scheduling capacity, and applies knowledge of the work area to
maximize efficiencies.
• Follows exams from start to finish through the complete system to ensure exams reached
archive/interpreting radiology site.
• Exhibits and maintains a high level of customer service and is respectful and professional at all times with
staff, both internal and external to the Cherokee Nation.
• Reports monthly procedure totals to the supervisor/director as requested.
• Assists providers with radiology projects in any capacity (scanning patients, retrieving reports, logging data,
and other).

values. Understands and promotes team participation over individual contributions.
• Coaches and mentors others relating to specific aspects of the job. Provides leadership and training to
students, technologists, and other staff members on an ongoing basis.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Must have completed Diagnostic Medical Sonography program or must possess ARRT or ARDMS
certification/registry in approved certification/registration.
• No additional experience required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger,
handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk.
The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The
employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100
pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision,
peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
• Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets
requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating.
• Must possess Sonography Technologist licensure/registration with the American Registry of Diagnostic
Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or American Registry of Radiological Technologist (ARRT).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification must be obtained within ninety (90) days of hire and maintained
throughout employment.
