An internship with American Family Insurance is a great opportunity to build your skillset and explore your career interests. Our summer student internship is a 10 to 14 week program that starts in mid to late May and ends in August. During your internship, you'll work on impactful projects that make a difference at our company, with our customers, and in our communities. You'll also gain exposure to different areas of our business and have numerous opportunities for networking and coaching. Interns may be eligible for a one-time hiring bonus to assist with housing costs depending upon proximity to an AmFam Group office.

Compensation Min: $25.00
Compensation Max: $39.00

As a Litigation Intern, you will assist with work performed by Staff Counsel of American Family's California staff counsel office. Under the direction of staff counsel attorneys, paralegals and the Managing Attorney, the individuals will work on projects related to written discovery, law and motion practice, and other key aspects of case handling leading up to trial. Seeking a current Law School student, who has completed at least one year of law school, to assist with work performed by Staff Counsel of American Family's California staff counsel office. Under the direction of staff counsel attorneys, paralegals and the Managing Attorney, you will work on projects related to written discovery, law and motion practice, and other key aspects of case handling leading up to trial.

Responsibilities

  • Develop an understanding of our business, corporate culture and structure to support your work.
  • Contribute creative ideas and strategic approaches in response to changing situations.
  • Complete tasks using both interpersonal and technical skills appropriate to the specific job assignment, while adapting to new or changing situations in a team environment.
  • Obtain practical knowledge and understanding of concepts learned in law school courses such as Civil Procedure, as well as substantive courses such as Torts, Remedies and Contracts.
  • Work with current staff counsel attorneys, as well as paralegals and the Managing Attorney, to actively assist in case handling and document preparation
  • Assist in drafting and responding to written discovery, drafting law and motion (such as discovery motions, ex parte motions, and other court filings), and preparing with other aspects of formal discovery (deposition outlines, exhibit compilation, etc.)

Requirements

  • Graduating August 2026 or later.
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited Law School and have completed the first year of studies.
  • Completed at least one year of Law School, including courses in Civil Procedure, Torts and Contracts.
  • Prior experience with Westlaw or LexisNexis.

Work Location:

This role may be considered for a Full-Time in Office or Hybrid work arrangement based on the selected candidate's location. Work locations for this role include California with preference in the Los Angeles or Bay areas.
