Job Title: Research Scientist I

The Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene, Inc. is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the full-time, salaried position of Research Scientist I at the New York State Office of Mental Health (NYS OMH), Office of Population Health and Evaluation (OPHE).

The Bureau of Program Research and Evaluation (PRE) within NYS OMH OPHE, conducts program evaluations for innovative behavioral health programs. NYS is part of a Medicaid demonstration program of Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHC), a federal initiative to expand access to mental health and addiction care in community-based settings. In addition to demonstration deliverables required by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), OPHE PRE are also evaluating a suicide prevention project within CCBHCs, and coordinating with several other studies of CCBHCs.

The candidate will work on a team under senior Research Scientists and support data collection, validation, analysis and reporting to OMH, SAMHSA and other stakeholders. Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work independently and in a team are essential in this position

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with large administrative data, perform data extraction, data cleaning and merging with other data sources to create analytical files using statistical software such as SAS and SQL.
  • Conduct quantitative data analyses using SAS.
  • Use visualization software such as Tableau to monitor trends, create reports and create maps.
  • Develop, maintain and run monthly processes to update reports, conduct data quality checks, and conduct visualization quality checks.
  • Develop and maintain data and project documentation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's Degree and two years of professional research experience in the appropriate fields include: Public Health, Psychology, Social Work, Biostatistics, Math, Computer Science, Data Science, or a closely related field; or
  • Master's Degree and one year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience of NYS OMH Medicaid data or other large state or federal databases
  • Expertise in using SAS and/or SQL
  • Experience with data visualization
  • Experience with program evaluation and monitoring
  • Experience with mental health populations and providers.
