Description
Job Objective: The Nurse Practitioner performs direct psychiatric care in the medical office setting under the supervision of a licensed psychiatrist. The Physician Assistant/ Nurse Practitioner obtains medical histories, performs medical evaluations on clinic patients, treats psychiatric problems, maintains records, and provides health education.
Responsibilities and Essential Duties:
• Focus primarily on the population identified or suspected behavioral/mental health conditions and establish therapeutic relationships with these patients to add psychiatric expertise to the medical management plan and mitigate any negative impact that behavioral conditions can have on patients' overall health and well-being.
• Provide all aspects of patient psychiatric healthcare, including diagnosis, and treatment of various psychiatric and common medical conditions.
• Diagnosis and support the management of comorbidities and complications common to patients with behavioral/mental health conditions.
• Provide direct psychiatric services through initial comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment, including prescribing and administering medications.
• Prescribe and monitor behavioral health medications prescribed.
• Handle psychiatric emergencies as needed.
• Communicate with the patient's primary care provider regarding changes in conditions or potential medication changes.
• Collaborate with supervising physician in regards to particularly complex behavioral/mental conditions. Maintain partnership with supervising physician through regular communication, care plan development, medication management, etc.
• Participate in quality assurance, educational, and professional committees as assigned by the Chief Medical Officer.
• Actively participate in regular multi-disciplinary team meetings to ensure that all high-risk patients consider and address behavioral health issues.
• Other duties, as assigned.

• He/she participates in other assigned duties as designated by the Chief Medical Officer.
• Also, perform tasks supportive of the job's essential functions, but which may be altered or redesigned depending upon individual circumstances.

• Answer and refer telephone calls or other inquires to ensure accurate and timely communications are facilitated.

• Demonstrate sound judgment by taking appropriate actions regarding questionable findings or concerns.
• Investigate and follow through on unusual orders or requests for service or information.
• Follow proper reporting procedures for actual or potential accidents and/or incidents so follow-up and/or prevention can occur.
• Record/report the need for service maintenance or repair of equipment and remove any faulty equipment from service.
• Consistently evaluate work and determine if further steps are needed to meet patient expectations.
• Take the initiative to do or redo inadequate or incomplete work, even if it is not yours.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

Qualifications
Physical Requirements/Environmental (based on essential functions):
• Able to lift 100 pounds, if necessary, to assist fallen patients. Able to lift 10 pounds for routine performance of essential functions.
• An individual in this position may be exposed to:
o Adverse indoor and outdoor environmental conditions
o Bloodborne pathogens
o Physical hazards (e.g., needle pricks, etc.)
o Chemical hazards.
Qualifications/Requirements/Skills:
• Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executive management, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
• Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/challenging priorities.
• Critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities are required as related to various aspects of patient care.
• Good clinical judgment
• Critical thinking skills are necessary to exercise and lead others in applying acceptable standards of practice.
Education/Training/Experience:
• Successful completion of an approved nurse practitioner program.
• Currently approved by joint Board of Medical Examiners and Board of Nursing to perform medical acts.
• Must be currently licensed as a registered nurse in the state.
• Due to the nature of responsibilities, it is preferable to have experience in counseling and teaching and have a master's degree.
• A minimum of one year's experience in related nursing positions is preferred.
