Job Goal
To lead and develop a comprehensive, student-centered Girls’ Basketball program that reflects E.O. Smith High School’s commitment to excellence, teamwork, equity, and character development. The Head Coach will provide leadership that promotes academic achievement, athletic skill development, and personal growth in all student-athletes, in alignment with the school’s Vision of the Graduate.
Qualifications
- Prior successful experience as a basketball coach at the high school or collegiate level preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of basketball strategies, skill development, and program management.
- Connecticut Coaching Certification (or eligibility) required.
- Current First Aid, CPR, and Concussion Management certifications required.
- Demonstrated ability to promote and uphold E.O. Smith’s values of sportsmanship, inclusivity, and community.
- Strong communication and organizational skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with athletes, families, faculty, and staff.
Primary Responsibilities
- Provide leadership, instruction, and supervision for the Girls’ Basketball program at all levels (varsity, junior varsity, and freshman).
- Establish and maintain a positive, inclusive team culture that emphasizes respect, accountability, and teamwork.
- Plan and conduct practices that develop individual and team skills, conditioning, and game strategy.
- Model and teach integrity, sportsmanship, and adherence to CIAC, league, and school policies.
- Support student-athletes’ academic and personal development, encouraging balance between athletics and academics.
- Collaborate with the Athletic Director, assistant coaches, and school staff to coordinate schedules, facilities, and communication.
- Promote the basketball program within the school and community, fostering school spirit and pride.
- Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all student-athletes.

- Ability to mentor assistant coaches and younger players to sustain long-term program success.
- Experience building connections between athletics and the broader school community, including service, leadership, and academic initiatives.
Compensation
$8,500 paid in two installments – Early December & Early March
