Chief Nursing Officer

 

Position Summary

Responsible for overseeing the administrative functions of the nursing departments and assigned clinical areas in alignment with the hospital’s philosophy and established standards and regulations for patient care. Collaborate with the administrative team to define, implement, and achieve organizational goals and objectives consistent with the hospital’s Mission, Vision, Values, and Promise. Provides leadership, authority, accountability, and coordination for all nurse executive functions across the organization.   

 

Role Description

The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is an integral member of the healthcare leadership team, providing direction and support to department directors and ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care. The CNO serves as a key liaison among the administrative team, medical staff, and department leaders, fostering collaboration and alignment across the organization. In partnership with the CEO and administrative team, the CNO contributes to the development, formulation, and implementation of the hospital’s strategic plans and actively participates as a core member of the hospital’s administrative team.

Supervises:

All nursing departments and personnel related to areas of assigned responsibility per the Organizational Chart.

                

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Consult with and advise the CEO of details related to the operation of the hospital/departments. 
  2. Recommend changes in administrative policies to carry out objectives of the hospital more effectively. 
  3. Assist CEO to carry out the objectives of the hospital more effectively. 
  4. Responsible for the development of Nursing policies and procedures per Conditions of Participation and regulations.
  5. Responsible for supervising nursing staff per Conditions of Participation.
  6. Educate and prepare hospital staff for state surveys and regulatory inspections, ensuring compliance with applicable standards and promoting readiness across all departments.
  7. Assist in the preparation of hospital/departmental budgets and allocation of funds based upon review of department estimates/recommendations, familiarity with operating procedures and cost/revenue projections. Review all department requests for capital expense items and submit the same, with the recommendation to CEO. Ensures the sound fiscal operation of the hospital. 
  8. Directs the preparation and maintenance of departmental reports.  Prepare periodic reports for the CEO.
  9. Prepare short and long-term departmental goals.  
  10. Evaluate the performance of department managers to provide for professional development and to maximize contributions towards established goals. 
  11. Provide for effective problem resolution within established guidelines. 
  12. Assist directors with the training, orientation and assignment of department staff. 
  13. Ensures the efficient, economic and quality performance of assigned departments to support or provide quality health care.
  14. Recommend new projects and services to CEO.
  15. Provides and maintains effective communications with Medical Staff, the community and all levels of supervision and staff.
  16. Maintains compliance with regulations governing hospitals and the rules of governing bodies by monitoring operations and initiating changes when required. 
  17. Participates in hospital/medical staff committee meetings as required.  Attends and serves on professional/civil service organizations as hospital representative.
  18. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in health care.
  19. Projects a positive, professional, and caring image at all times. 
  20. Operates within the defined scope of the position and adheres to ethical standards of practice. 
  21. Performs other administrative/managerial, or technical duties as assigned, directed or requested.

Minimum Educational Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an approved institution required.  Master’s Degree in Nursing or related Healthcare field is desirable.  Course work in management skills is desirable.  

 

Licensure/Certification 

Current license in the State of Iowa as a Registered Nurse; Successful completion of BLS. ANA or AONE Certification in Nursing Administration encouraged. Successful completion of BLS.

 

Experience

At least five years of hospital nursing experience, part of which has been in a leadership capacity with demonstrated ability in nursing practice and competence in management, quality improvement and patient safety.
