The Director of Compliance is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing all aspects of Regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation within the company’s trucking and logistics operations. This position ensures that the company maintains full compliance with federal, state, and local transportation regulations, while fostering a proactive, safety-first culture among drivers, dispatchers, and field personnel.
The ideal candidate is an experienced safety leader with deep knowledge of FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, and EPA regulations, and a proven ability to build and sustain programs that improve safety performance, compliance standards, and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Management
- Work with the Director of Safety to develop, implement, and manage comprehensive safety programs for drivers, maintenance personnel, and office staff.
- Lead accident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action processes.
- Champion a culture of safety awareness and accountability across all departments.
- Coordinate with HR, Operations and Safety on driver onboarding, certification renewals, and disciplinary actions.
Compliance Management and Oversight
- Ensure company adherence to all FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, EPA, and other applicable federal and state regulations.
- Manage compliance audits, inspections, and reporting, including IFTA, IRP, UCR, and ELD compliance.
- Develop, maintain, and enforce company policies related to Hours of Service (HOS), vehicle maintenance, and driver qualifications.
- Oversee the company’s drug and alcohol testing program in accordance with DOT requirements.
- Maintain all required records, permits, and documentation for company operations.
- Assemble, audit, and maintain Driver Qualification Files in line with DOT standards
- Monitor and update driver credentials such as licenses, medical cards, and insurance documentation
- Conduct and report quarterly safety and compliance audits
Leadership & Strategy
- Collaborate with executive leadership to align compliance goals with company growth strategies.
- Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies, insurance carriers, and legal representatives on compliance matters.
- Develop and manage department budgets for training, and compliance initiatives.
- Provide regular reporting and performance updates to senior management.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Transportation, Logistics, or related field (Master’s preferred).
- Minimum 5-8 years of experience in trucking or transportation safety and compliance management.
- Proven success leading multi-site or fleet-wide safety and compliance programs.
- Comprehensive understanding of FMCSA and DOT regulations, including CSA, HOS, and vehicle inspection requirements.
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong leadership, communication, and team development skills.
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with compliance and telematics systems (e.g., Solera Smart Drive, Geotab, etc.).
- High level of integrity, discretion, and attention to detail.
Preferred Certifications
- Certified Director of Safety (CDS) – North American Transportation Management Institute (NATMI)
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) – Board of Certified Safety Professionals
- OSHA 30-Hour Certification
- Transportation Risk Specialist (TRS) or similar credential
