Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits provided to regular Board of Regents or Civil Service employees. Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provide support services to program-eligible college students in the following areas: academic advising, financial aid/scholarship counseling, career planning, and personal guidance.
  2. Provide support in managing and overseeing student support services, ensuring the delivery of effective assistance to program participants.
  3. Assist in coordinating the recruitment and selection process of peer mentor/peer tutors and project participants.
  4. Assist in coordinating the delivery of training and development services to student employees and program participants, equipping them with the necessary skills to support their peers effectively.
  5. Design and implement academic learning skills and personal development workshops tailored to the needs of program participants, fostering their academic and personal growth.
  6. Organize and conduct academic survival and enrichment workshops and cultural/social enrichment activities.
  7. Establish effective partnerships with staff, faculty, and stakeholders within the institution and the broader community to support program participants.
  8. Assist in developing and implementing strategies to address educational barriers.
  9. Develop, collect, and maintain student, service, and program data for program assessments, reporting, and continuous improvement efforts, ensuring data integrity and confidentiality.
  10. Assignments may include evening and weekend work; and travel between Hilo, West Hawaii, and other off-site locations.
  11. Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  1. Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Education, Counseling and Guidance, Counseling Psychology, Sociology, Social Work College Student Personnel Services, Liberal Arts, Human Resources, English, Communications, Hawaiian Studies/Language, Mathematics, Nursing, Engineering, Business Administration or related filed and one (1) year of professional experience with the responsibility of providing tutorial services, academic support, and academic advising to college students; or equivalent education/training or experience.


Desirable Qualifications

  1. Master’s degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, or related field.
  2. Previous experience with or tutoring/training coordination, college teaching, or counseling.
  3. Background in designing, managing, or implementing programs related to tutoring, counseling, student affairs, teaching, or similar fields.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work independently and creatively to address student needs and program goals.
  5. Strong attention to detail and a track record of following through on project completion.
  6. Experience in developing and managing budgets to support program activities and initiatives.
  7. Demonstrated commitment or experience in promoting equity and fostering a diverse workforce and academic environment.
