We are looking for someone to join Team Yuma as a Senior Street Maintenance Worker, working with the Department of Public Works. The ideal candidate will have experience in construction or maintenance working with asphalt roads, concrete work, or traffic control signs and markings.

Under basic supervision, this job classification performs journey-level skilled labor in the maintenance of City streets, roadways, and signage, and performs traffic control activities at work sites for the Public Works Department (PWD); operates vehicles, equipment, and tools in accordance with all safety regulations.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Maintains, repairs, and constructs streets, roadways, infrastructure, properties, and signage for the Public Works Department (PWD), in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; duties will vary according to job assignment.
  • Performs skilled and semiskilled construction, maintenance and technical work.
  • Performs roadway maintenance duties in City rights of way and storm drainage infrastructure. 
  • Sets up traffic control zones at Public Works construction sites to minimize risk of accidents and enhance safety of work crews; assists with traffic flagging as needed; repairs street signs.
  • Operates a variety of trucks and equipment to repair and maintain roads and roadways; hauls materials and equipment to job sites; repairs street surfaces, patches asphalt; installs and repairs concrete components, performs fog sealing and crack sealing functions.
  • Assists with the training and cross-training of work crews in construction and maintenance procedures, techniques and safety standards; instructs crew in proper use and maintenance of equipment and tools.
  • Monitors work site to assure that safety rules and regulations are followed, and that the work area and all equipment are in safe operating condition; reports safety hazards, traffic problems, equipment problems and emergency situations.
  • Assures that adequate supplies are on hand, and makes recommendations regarding equipment and supplies needed.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs within scope of authority, and in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; notifies supervisor of safety hazards, equipment problems and emergency situations.
  • Assists with Solid Waste programs.
  • Adheres to safety procedures in work areas and in performance of work assignments; promotes a culture of safety.
  • Supports the relationship between the City and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes the City goals and priorities, vision, values and the “Yuma Way”, and complies with all City policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines

High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND three years experience in construction or maintenance of asphalt roads, concrete work or traffic control signs and markings; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge of: 

  • City policies and procedures.
  • City safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Materials, equipment and methods used in infrastructure construction and maintenance.
  • Materials, equipment and methods used in traffic control signing and marking operations.
  • Traffic laws and regulations involved in truck and equipment operations.
  • Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), and ADOT standards, protocols, specifications and guidelines for public works construction and safety standards in hazardous traffic environments.
  • Proper use and storage of chemicals, including OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for hazardous chemicals used in the workplace.
  • City geography, traffic patterns, streets, landmarks and facility locations.

Skill in:

  • Operating and maintaining tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Identifying and evaluating unsafe conditions and work site problems.
  • Inspecting and maintaining vehicles and specialized equipment.
  • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.
  • Promoting and enforcing safe work practices.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with co-workers.
  • Following verbal and written instructions and procedures.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

A valid Arizona State Class A Commercial Driver's License is required within twelve months of hire. OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations (HAZWOPER), NIMS Emergency Response, and MUTCD certifications in work zone traffic control,  technical training or certifications from OSHA, ATSSA, IMSA, and ADOT pesticide license may be required. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in City indoors, outdoors and at City facilities; requires ability to bend, reach, stoop, and lift objects; may be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment; safety precautions must be followed, including use of safety equipment.
