The Building Automation Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of building automation systems (BAS) that control and monitor mechanical, electrical, plumbing, leak detection, research laboratory exhaust and HVAC systems. This role ensures optimal system performance, energy efficiency, and occupant comfort by programming, maintaining and calibrating control systems and integrating various building technologies.
Responsibilities
- Install, program, configure, and commission building automation systems, including controllers, sensors, variable frequency drives, research laboratory exhaust valves and networking components
- Analyze system performance, identify inefficiencies, perform trending analysis, and implement improvements to enhance energy efficiency and system reliability
- Ensure seamless integration between various building systems, including HVAC, lighting, security, plumbing, lab exhaust and fire protection
- Operate multimeters and voltage testers to assess electrical components, ensuring system integrity and safety
- Employ network analyzers to monitor and troubleshoot communication issues within BAS networks
- Use programming interfaces to set up, customize, and fine-tune system parameters for optimal performance
- Apply infrared thermography to detect thermal anomalies, identifying potential issues in electrical and mechanical systems
- Install, repair and maintain hydronic, steam, water, chilled water, heating water and energy control valves
- Utilize a Building Energy Management System (BEMS) to monitor and analyze energy consumption patterns
- Work with university energy management teams to analyze building performance and implement conservation strategies
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or GED
- Experience: Minimum of 4 years of experience with building automation systems, preferably in an institutional or large-scale facility setting.
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Experience with major BAS platforms such as Automated Logic, Schneider Electric, Trane, Johnson Controls Metasys or Tridium Niagara
- Operate multimeters and voltage testers and infrared thermography
- Knowledge of HVAC, electrical, and mechanical systems
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and sequence of operations
- Other Conditions:
- Maintain a valid Driver’s license
- Ability to wear a respirator and other assigned PPE

UT Facilities Services is responsible for the care and keeping of more than 300 facilities and utilities systems in and around Knoxville. As the University of Tennessee Knoxville’s largest non-academic department, team members are responsible for facilities maintenance and repair, custodial needs, landscaping and lawncare, utility work, in-house and capital construction projects, facilities planning and design, environmental initiatives, pest control, campus event services, and facilities administration functions for both the flagship campus and the agricultural institute.
