Dean of Students: To function as the building’s chief disciplinarian and attendance officer. To assist in the daily operation of the district’s middle high school with a learner-centered approach that focuses on developing all students in a safe, non-threatening environment. To build and maintain a sense of “team” for the mhs staff, regarding attendance and classroom management-student discipline. To promote opportunities for students to succeed in school, and participate in extra- and co-curricular activities that foster mental, social, and physical skills, a sense of worth and competence, principles of fair play, and complement the instructional mission, vision, and philosophy of the school district. To meet with parents and students and create attendance, discipline, and safety contracts where necessary; sit in on IEPs, 504s, and behavior meetings as requested.
Additionally; Assistant Principal: Work always in support of the building principal and when directed, step in and perform the duties as building principal; assist with: curriculum and instruction programming; overseeing district and school improvement plan and implementation, instructional policies, reporting on academic progress, and in the supervision of building employees (support and teaching staff) including observations and performance evaluations.
MINIMUM Requirements:
Dean of Students: M.A. in Education/Education Administration or three years’
consecutive, successful teaching experience. Four-year degree in education from an
accredited university, and current, valid Michigan teaching certificate.

Assistant Principal: Must possess current, valid School Administrator certificate (per
current MDE guidelines or if the district wishes, agree to a School Administrator Permit
and obtain same within three years per the law in Michigan) and current, valid Michigan
teaching certificate with three years’ consecutive, successful teaching experience
Strong oral and written communication skills. Basic understanding of sound public
school discipline, attendance, finance, pupil accounting, and school reporting.
Successful background check. Certified in First Aid and CPR/Heartsaver, annual blood
borne pathogens and other district-directed training. Three years consecutive successful
secondary teaching experience.
Preferred Requirements:
M.A. in Education Administration.
Three (3) years successful experience as a Dean of Students, Assistant Principal, or
building administrator at a public secondary school; five (5) years successful experience
as a teacher at a public secondary school.
Performance Responsibilities:
1. Reports directly to middle high school principal.
2. Promotes the district’s mission in seeking to educate all youth; seeks closure in all cases
regarding discipline or attendance—always with the goal in mind of addressing student needs and creating opportunities for success.
3. Serves as grades 6-12 chief disciplinarian and attendance officer; makes decisions regarding suspensions in- and out-of-school up to and including recommendation for expulsion, taking into full consideration MDE guidelines, state law, and district policies and procedures.
4. Assists the testing coordinator as requested or assigned.
5. Responsible for the enforcement of the Student Code of Conduct. Responsible for daily
attendance, phone calls and correspondence to parents, truancy officer, or others as needed.
Documentation of discipline, contact with parents, attends meetings as requested. Writes
letters, attendance and behavior contracts, and safety assessments and plans.
6. Works closely with the in school success secretary, student success coordinator, building
principal, superintendent, and secretarial staff.
7. Under the direction of the building principal and superintendent, is responsible for the
supervision of classroom management and student conduct; also, responsible for student
safety in accordance with all district, state, and federal directives, laws, and guidelines.
8. Engages all students in a meaningful way, supports teachers and staff. Success of school-
wide discipline and attendance policies and enforcement depends on combination of
creativity and sound pedagogy while adhering to district, state, and federal guidelines and
regulations.
9. Engages the public in a meaningful way to provide service-learning opportunities and
develop in students the importance of community and intrapersonal skills.
10. Responds to parent/guardian requests/needs in a timely and professional manner.
11. Promotes all school programs—general and special education, career tech, and athletic;
encourages students to participate in the educational process and graduate with a positive plan for life after high school.
12. Keep principals, Transportation, Operations and Maintenance supervisor, IT director, athletic director, and superintendent advised of transportation, safety, logistic, technology,
building/athletic department and/or other pertinent issues and needs.
13. Assists in facilitation and supervision of all federal and state-mandated drills (fire, lock
down’s, tornado, others).
14. Responsible for upkeep and maintenance of district-owned or -leased property and all
purchased and donated materials and supplies.
15. Maintains files and records, and guards confidential material in accordance with school law,
MDE guidelines, and district policies.
16. Maintains strong public relations and welcomes public engagement through written and
spoken venues.
17. Develops professional knowledge through readings, conference and seminar attendance.
18. Attend meetings called for by middle high school and superintendent and other supervisors
and administrators as requested.
19. Assists the building principal with the institution, maintenance, and continuation of school pride.
20. Transcribes, drafts, and/or prepares letters, memos, agenda items, newsletters, reports, and other documents.
21. Works with other staff to promote all schools, buildings, and teams within the Disrict.
22. Maintains and protects confidentiality of administration, all staff, and students.
23. Professional dress required.
24. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
25. Assists the building principal in all duties including the supervision of all assigned students, programs of instruction, the school improvement plan, strategic plan, Michigan Integrated Continuous Improvement Plan, oversight of instructional polices and proscribed procedures, executive level reporting regarding academic progress, work priorities and decision making, and staff observation and evaluation.
26. Acts as building principal during building principal absences or as directed by principal or
superintendent.
27. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Equipment Used: Task specific equipment and standard office equipment, including computer/laptop, printer, copy equipment, fax machine, phone system, student files, Power School and other software, 10-key calculator, walk-talkies (two-way radios) and intercom.
Independent Decisions/Work: is performed with considerable latitude and independent judgment under the general direction of the building principal or superintendent. Enforces district policies, student handbook, and code of conduct.
Supervision Received and Exercised, Liaisons & Coordination of Effort: The Dean of Students/Assistant Principal receives oral and/or written instructions from the building principal or superintendent. Consults with students, parents/guardians, guidance counselors, success workers, social workers, ISD personnel, MAS staff and administrators and supervisors in the completion of assigned duties.
Unusual Working Conditions: work is performed outside/athletic fields in fine and inclement weather; inside in offices, teacher classrooms, the parking lot, hallways, restrooms, cafeteria, library and other various places found in a public school district. Physical ability to perform child restraint and lift items up to 100 lbs. is occasionally required.
Other Qualifications: Skill in organizing and maintaining accurate records and filing systems. Ability to meet deadlines and to flexibly reprioritize work as needed; to identify and address school or district needs; to positively represent the school or district to parents, user groups, and the general public; to interact with others in a courteous and tactful manner; to maintain confidentiality of records and oral information; and to assign students out of school or in school suspensions, to after school, during school, lunch, and Saturday School detentions.
Evaluation: annual performance review with building principal or superintendent.
