Description

The Library Assistant is responsible for the daily operations of the library facility, oversight and scheduling of student workers, and coordination of interlibrary loan functions. The position also has additional technical duties in support of the MBKU library team. The Library Assistant reports directly to the Library Director.

Work Shift:  Monday through Friday; 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Coordinates the daily operations of the library:

  • Supervises library work-study personnel, interviews and selects (in consultation with Librarians and Director). Schedules work shifts each quarter, instructs and trains new hires, and supervises and oversees the quality of daily work. Organizes and instructs students for long-term Library projects such as stacks maintenance and other special projects as needed. Processes payroll of all student workers.
  • Assists library patrons in the use of Library services, resources, and equipment; provides information about library policies, procedures, and other informational inquiries.  Recognizes when additional assistance is needed and refers the patron to a librarian.

Primary responsibility for interlibrary loan services:

  • Responds to ILL requests through e-mail correspondence, OCLC, and Docline databases.  Retrieve and forward Lending requests and process Borrowing requests. Coordinate, reconcile, and audit Electronic Fund Transfer Service accounts. Track and report monthly and annual ILL statistics.

Responsible for library technical services:

  • Processing and cataloging new acquisitions, binding, circulation, reserve materials, and gifts in accordance with library policies, and supports the library team as needed.
    • Binding includes such tasks as preparing bindery shipments, maintaining bindery records, and processing bound volumes.
    • Cataloging includes such tasks as preparing bibliographic records using bibliographic utilities, and ordering and processing new acquisitions.
    • Circulation includes such tasks as maintaining circulation records, checking material into and out of the library, and preparing overdue notices.
    • Course Reserve Material includes such tasks as maintaining and updating current course reserve resource lists, recalling, locating, and making materials available for course reserves. Processing items, activating, and running appropriate reports.
    • Gifts include such tasks as maintaining records of library gifts and preparing acknowledgment memos.
    • Accounting includes Excel entries and follow-up for purchases and deposits.
    • Supplies include researching, maintaining, and ordering general materials for Library needs.
    • Statistics includes keeping accurate records in areas of responsibility and providing statistics as needed (usually monthly).
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required; adhering to university attendance policy.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school in Library Sciences or currently enrolled in an accredited library sciences program and/or two years of recent library experience, including supervisory experience.
