This part-time position supports the Workman School of Dental Medicine (WSDM) at High Point University by providing clinical informatics expertise with a focus on EPIC systems. Leveraging a nursing background, the role centers on optimizing healthcare workflows, supporting system configuration, delivering end-user training, and offering technical assistance to ensure effective clinical operations across the HPU Health – Oral Health Network.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong understanding of clinical environments, healthcare technology, and change management. This role collaborates closely with IT, clinical teams, and academic leadership to align system functionality with operational and educational goals. The position reports to the Dean of the Workman School of Dental Medicine.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Registered Nurse (RN) with experience in clinical informatics or healthcare IT.
  • Proficiency in EPIC systems, including configuration, training, and support.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills across clinical and academic teams.
  • Experience in workflow analysis, clinical documentation, and system optimization.
  • Preferred: Experience in higher education, healthcare project management, or quality improvement initiatives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Clinical Informatics & EPIC Support

  • Serve as the primary liaison for EPIC-related initiatives within the dental medicine network.
  • Configure and optimize EPIC workflows to support clinical and academic operations.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for EPIC users, including faculty, staff, and students.
  • Develop and deliver training materials and sessions tailored to various user groups.
  • Run and interpret clinical and operational reports to support data-driven decision-making.

Workflow Optimization & Change Management

  • Collaborate with clinical and administrative teams to assess and improve healthcare workflows.
  • Support the implementation of new features or modules within EPIC.
  • Participate in quality improvement and clinical integration projects.
  • Assist with onboarding and orientation of clinical staff, ensuring alignment with system standards and institutional values.

Project Coordination (as needed)

  • Contribute to strategic initiatives led by the Dean’s office, particularly those involving clinical systems and informatics.
  • Coordinate timelines, deliverables, and communications for informatics-related projects.
  • Support select events or initiatives that intersect with clinical operations or technology.

Executive Support & Strategic Partnership

As a part-time Healthcare Informatics Specialist, this role provides strategic and operational support to the Dean of the Workman School of Dental Medicine and Senior Director of Clinical Operations, with a focus on healthcare systems and clinical technology. While not primarily administrative, the role contributes to executive effectiveness by offering informatics insights that support decision-making, workflow alignment, and system readiness.

Responsibilities may include preparing data-informed reports, supporting presentations related to clinical systems, and advising on the integration of EPIC into academic and clinical operations. The role also fosters strong working relationships with stakeholders across High Point University, HPU Health, and external partners to ensure alignment between clinical informatics and institutional goals.

Communications & Hospitality Leadership

In this part-time capacity, the selected candidate serves as a key liaison between clinical operations, IT, and academic leadership. With a nursing background and EPIC expertise, the role supports the implementation, training, and optimization of clinical workflows within the EPIC system, ensuring that users across the dental medicine network are equipped for success.

The role involves developing clear, user-friendly training materials and documentation, facilitating onboarding for clinical staff, and supporting communication strategies that promote system adoption and best practices. Through a collaborative and service-oriented approach, the Healthcare Informatics Specialist helps maintain a professional and welcoming environment for faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders.

Project Management & Special Initiatives

This role supports and occasionally leads informatics-related projects that enhance clinical efficiency, data quality, and patient care within the dental school and oral health network. Projects may include EPIC module rollouts, workflow redesigns, or quality improvement initiatives aligned with institutional priorities.

The Healthcare Informatics Specialist assists with gathering and analyzing clinical data, mapping workflows, and coordinating with IT and clinical teams to ensure successful implementation. While not responsible for full event planning, the role may support the technical or operational aspects of key events—such as ensuring EPIC access for visiting clinicians or preparing data dashboards for leadership presentations.

Confidentiality & Discretion

  • Handle highly sensitive and confidential information with the utmost integrity and discretion, including personnel matters, financial data, strategic plans, research findings, and patient-related information (adhering strictly to HIPAA guidelines).
  • Serve as a trusted confidant and gatekeeper for the Dean, exercising sound judgment in all interactions.

ACCOUNTABILITY: 

  • This position will report to the Senior Director of Clinical Operations with input from the Dean and Executive Leadership Team members.
  • Evaluation: Ongoing performance reviews are conducted along with an annual assessment by the Senior Director of Clinical Operations, which includes input from the Dean, faculty, personnel, and learners.
