This is skilled work in the application of various types of pavement markings. Work involves the operation of special pavement marking equipment, including thermoplastic liners and multi-line pavement marking machines. Work also involves the layout and installation of markings in accordance with standards outlined in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Markings Crew Leader.
Position Duties
- Performs the lay-out and installation of pavement markings on streets, highways, parking lots, utilizing various material and application equipment.
- Removes traffic markers from the pavement utilizing specialized equipment.
- Maintains and services machines and equipment used in pavement marking operations.
- May be required to work overtime, or alternate hours, as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
- Conduct traffic control.
- Prepares and sets up signage for special events, Temporary Traffic Control (TTC), and road closures.
- Operates a forklift.
- Utilizes an iPad/computer and related software to create and close out work orders.
- Assist with inventory control.
- Maintains and fills sandbags as needed.
- Participate in the County’s on-call program.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all staff.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High school diploma / GED and one (1) year of working experience in construction, road maintenance, or an equivalent combination of formal education and working experience.
Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E driver’s license.
- Must possess or obtain within six (6) months of hire, an FDOT-approved Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) Intermediate certification.
- Must possess or obtain within one (1) year of hire, an IMSA Signs and Pavement Markings Technician Level I certification.
- Must possess or obtain within six (6) months of hire, an OSHA forklift safety certification.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
- Demonstrated skill in the use of tools and equipment necessary to perform work.
- Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.
- Knowledge of methods, practices and tools used in roadway striping equipment and operations.
- Knowledge of the County Standards, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Standards, and Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the job.
- Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all staff and the general public.
- Able to use pavement marking stencils.
- Able to install traffic control signs, posts and street signs.
- Able to work under stressful conditions.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to perform work under adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to do heavy lifting up to fifty (50) pounds.
- Ability to work with a crew.
Other Qualifications
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to work outdoors in adverse and extreme weather conditions (heat, humidity, cold, rain, etc.). The employee is frequently exposed to noise, dust, fumes, airborne particles, uneven surfaces, heights, electrical energy, and stressful situations. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
