GEAR UP Strategist

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
To work with cohort student group to ensure annual promotion to the next grade level, and increase post- secondary enrollment by providing leadership, training, and technical assistance in supporting systemic reform of school services for student academic success.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification: - Texas Teaching Certificate
- Masters Degree in Counseling or Counselor Certification – preferred
- Bilingual/ESL Certification Preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills: - Demonstrated understanding of characteristics and challenges of first-generation, economically disadvantaged students
- Experience collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data
- Experience with federally funded grant programs
- Experience with budget planning and campus/district accounting policies
- Experience designing and implementing higher education awareness or academic support programs
- Broad understanding of college readiness and access programs (K-16 reform, admissions standards, and student financial aid)
- Excellent communication skills both in writing and verbally
Experience: - Three or more years of successful classroom teaching experience in middle, high school, or higher education
- Experience coordinating tutoring and counseling/advising services
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
I. UTRGV GEAR Up - Serve as the liaison between UTRGV GEAR UP Project and the assigned campus.
- Attend Project meetings and trainings as required by UTRGV GEAR UP Director.
- Collect student, parent, and teacher service data and input into data management online system.
- Administer and collect student, parent, and teacher surveys annually.
- Coordinate with UTRGV GEAR UP staff in planning and implementing allowable services at the campus level that are aligned to Project objectives and outcomes with emphasis on rigorous courses, early preparation, college planning, testing, financial aid, and the importance of family involvement.
- Develop a budget plan with campus administration, counseling department, and UTRGV GEAR UP staff to maximize GEAR UP funds for the benefit of all participants.
- Provide GEAR UP awareness information to teachers, staff, and district office.
- Recruit and train tutors; coordinate tutoring services for GEAR UP students.
- Plan and execute GEAR UP parental involvement activities at the campus.
- Plan and coordinate with UTRGV GEAR UP for professional development opportunities for teachers that are aligned with Project objectives and outcomes.
- Build community partnerships in areas of mentoring, leadership development, career exploration, financial literacy, job shadowing, and others critical areas to sustain the mission of GEAR UP beyond grant funding cycle.
- Adhere to strict data deadlines and other requests made in order to comply with the U.S. Department of Education Annual Performance Report (APR) process.
II. Instructional / Student Management: - Assist GEAR UP students failing classes and/or state mandated assessments (including, but not limited to, STAAR / STAAR EOC) by informing parents, ensuring students attend tutoring, and monitoring student progress.
- Initiate methods for improving the implementation of GEAR UP goals and objectives at the campus level.
- Meet with teachers and students regularly to monitor implementation of GEAR UP academic initiatives.
- Monitor and report progress of GEAR UP objectives to district and campus personnel.
- Acquire knowledge and receive training to prepare students for institutions of higher learning.
- Work cooperatively with principal and attendance clerks to provide information concerning GEAR UP students.
- Monitor attendance of GEAR UP students and follows-up to ensure GEAR UP students are in school.
- Plan and coordinate special programs for college admissions and college placement exams.
- Interpret results of tests to students and parents (state mandated assessments (STAAR / STAAR EOC), as well as PSAT, ACT/SAT, and TSIA).
- Use individual test results to help assess individual student’s strengths and weaknesses.
- Disseminate information to GEAR UP students concerning opportunities for summer school/Summer Program.
- Assist GEAR UP students in developing four year high school plans.
- Provide current information on reference guides and colleges and maintain appropriate career information for GEAR UP students.
- Coordinate and assist the college scholarship process for GEAR Up students.
- Assist GEAR UP students and their teachers with the application process for college admission, scholarships, financial aid, alternative post high school training, including letters of recommendation.
- Plan, coordinate, and/or assist with informational sessions for collegiate, military, and other post secondary opportunities for GEAR UP students.
III. School / Organizational Climate: - Develop and support GEAR UP parent initiatives at the campus level.
- Serve as a resource person for parents of GEAR UP students regarding problems affecting the orderly educational, physical, emotional, or social growth of the GEAR Up students.
IV. Administration and Fiscal / Facilities Management: - Comply with district policies, as well as state and federal guidelines.
- Perform budgetary, record keeping, and data management requirements of the GEAR UP federal grant.
- Maintain accurate and complete auditable documentation.
V. Professional Growth and Development: - Participate in district-required and GEAR Up required professional development.
- Utilize and share information in professional development programs.
- Conduct oneself in a professional, ethical manner in accordance with generally accepted standards; complies with TEA code.
VI. Other: - Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.
- Perform other related GEAR UP duties as assigned by principal.
