Position Summary

The Health & Wellness Social Worker plays a vital role in supporting the well-being, adjustment, and academic success of veteran and military-affiliated students, as well as the broader MCNY student community. This position provides case management, counseling, and wellness programming to address the unique challenges faced by student veterans. The Social Worker will be on campus at least one day per week with additional availability for virtual sessions to meet student needs.

This role also supports outreach and engagement efforts, connecting students to resources such as military benefits, health and wellness services, and community-based supports. Additionally, the Social Worker collaborates on programming and events designed to enhance student wellness, raise awareness of veteran issues, and strengthen the College’s veteran enrollment and retention initiatives.

Note: This is a grant-funded position. Employment is contingent upon the availability of grant funds. Should funding cease, the position may be terminated without cause with written notice.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide mental health and wellness support services to veteran students and their families, including counseling, crisis intervention, and referrals.
  • Assist in developing and delivering wellness and social service programs for both veteran and general student populations.
  • Support the recruitment and engagement of veteran and military-dependent students.
  • Collaborate with MCNY Social Worker 
  • Serve as a point of contact for veterans navigating health-related resources.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential documentation of services and student progress in accordance with institutional and ethical standards.
  • Partner with the Veterans Center team to plan and implement events that promote wellness, community-building, and veteran enrollment/retention.
  • Participate in relevant training sessions and professional development opportunities as directed.
  • Provide consultation and resources to faculty and staff on veteran student wellness and adjustment needs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or a related field required; Master’s degree strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of professional experience in counseling, case management, or student support services.
  • Experience working with veterans, military-affiliated populations, or in higher education strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of veteran benefits, community resources, and wellness best practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently, maintain confidentiality, and build rapport with diverse student populations.
