The Senior Automation Engineer II position is an exciting opportunity to join PM Group’s quickly growing USA regional team. Together we are sharing knowledge, learning, growing, and continuing to be an integral part of supporting PM Group’s ongoing expansion in the US. This individual can be located out of our Philadelphia area office in Conshohocken, PA or our Boston area office in Burlington, MA. We are executing cutting-edge projects for the Pharmaceutical, Biologics and Cell & Gene Therapy (life sciences) industry – from feasibility through to qualification – for both local and international clients. Together with our clients and partners, we deliver projects that improve the everyday lives of people across the globe.
This is a senior-level career position, and we are looking for a Senior Automation Engineer II who enjoys client interaction as well as the technical aspects of the position. They will also be involved with mentoring and development of less experienced Automation team members. Expect project work to include all levels of design: feasibility studies, conceptual & schematic design, construction documentation, and construction administration. Project sizes will vary and will consist primarily of life science industry projects doing both existing building improvements and new construction.
The Senior Automation Engineer II is responsible for supporting efforts throughout the entire PM Group US region. Consequently, the position will require some travel to client sites and other PM Group offices as needed.

- Lead the Automation Team on various projects as part of a multidiscipline project team
- Analyze complex engineering problems and offer effective solutions
- Provide support to fee and capital budget proposals as required
- Assemble and manage bid, approval and construction issue Automation packages in an efficient and lean manner
- Support Concept and Basis of Design studies
- Develop Functional Descriptions as input documents to the system integrators
- Mentor Automation engineering staff at junior and intermediate levels, if required
- Check other Automation engineers work for accuracy and quality; undertake peer reviews
- Control system design for industrial automation equipment for all project stages
- Select and manage automation contractors throughout the project life cycle
- Review and comment on system integrator and vendor design documentation
- Communicate with automation vendors and stay up to date with the latest automation technology trends
- Extensive and independent contact with clients, vendor’s representatives and project field personnel
- Attend and participate in client and PM Group meetings
- Direct and/or participate in project site visits to monitor, review and sign-off on automation / process control installations
- Other special projects as needed
- Bachelor’s Degree in Automation / Electronics / Electrical Engineering or similar discipline
- Registered Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is strongly preferred; registration in CA, PA or MA is preferred
- 10+ Years of formal experience in heavy industrial engineering design (preferably in the Pharmaceutical, Biopharmaceutical, Cell & Gene Therapy sectors)
- Experience with software development and the design of Industrial Control Systems
- PLC / DCS based Control Systems design experience
- Advanced knowledge of software architectures and design including S88, GAMP, 21CFRPart 11
- Knowledge of industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Profibus, Controlnet)
- Commercially aware and has the ability to undertake value engineering activities as well as implement new technologies to provide costs effective solutions for our clients
- Commercially aware on project execution, control of budgets, resourcing and change control
- Multiple office execution experience is advantageous
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to prepare written specifications and contract documents is required
- Professional approach and demeanor with a strong ethical approach to safety, quality, environmental protection and business
- Ability to play a positive role in multi-discipline teams with a reliable, consistent and mature approach to work
