PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to perform advanced level scientific/technical work involving the maintenance and
operation of a water treatment plant. Employees in this classification collect and compile data; treat water; and maintain
the wells, lime softening, filtration, chemical feed station, sludge water, storage tanks, computer D.A.S. system, and lab
equipment processes. Position reports to the Water Treatment Plant Supervisor/Laboratory Technical Director.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not
exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.
Other duties may be required and assigned.
Tests new water in order to calculate the chemical feed rates of chlorine, fluoride, lime, phosphate, polymer, and
ammonia; performs a minimum of eighty-four (84) tests per eight-hour shift; retests treated water to ascertain that the
proper chemical balance has been reached.
Adjusts chemical feeders and retests until correct results are attained.
Take daily samples and tests for bacterial contamination.
Refills fluoride, hexametaphosphate, and polymer feed tanks and changes chlorine cylinders; maintains disinfection
system, which includes chlorine and ammonia injection and testing; adjusts and maintains lime feeding unit; adjusts
flow of softening units, filters, phosphates, polymer, fluoride and lime slurry pumps.
Operate sludge dewatering system, well pumps, transfer pumping station, backwash filters, and sludge blowdown
system.
Performs preventive maintenance as required and maintains associated records and logs.
Calibrate all meters and scales.
Perform routine and non-routine lab duties.
Operate water treatment plant D.A.S. system; prepares associated reports.
Receives and inventories chemicals and equipment.
Operate forklift and dump truck.
Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, or other documents.
Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews,
completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data; verifies accuracy of entered data and makes corrections;
utilizes word processing, spreadsheet, or other software programs.
Communicate with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate
work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Assists the Operations Department in repairs of equipment; assists Controlmen in pipeline operation in an
emergency.
Performs housekeeping at plant.
Provide assistance to other employees or departments as needed.
Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by one (1) year actual experience in a class "A" water treatment plant or
two (2) years previous experience and/or training as an FKAA Plant Operator D. Must possess and maintain a valid
Florida driver’s license. Must be a Certified Operator holding a Florida State “C” Certification in drinking water. Must
be able to work rotating shifts. Must be able to communicate and comprehend the English language.

equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; ability to
calculate decimals and percentages; may include ability to perform mathematical operations with fractions; may
include ability to compute discount, interest, profit and loss, ratio and proportion; may include ability to calculate
surface areas, volumes, weights, and measures.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions
furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify
methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically
demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching,
and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and
materials (20-50 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds,
taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental
conditions, such as dust, odors, wetness, humidity, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations,
electric currents, toxic agents, disease, or pathogenic substances.
