Responsibilities: As an Athletics Coach you are directly responsible to both the head coach and the Director of Athletics. The coach of an individual sport must realize that any activity sponsored by SHS Athletics is part of the total program offered by SHS. Individuals in charge of such activities must utilize sound educational principles and goals if athletics are to be a worthwhile part of the overall school program.
Statement of Duties:
- Promotes by example. Loyalty, leadership, dedication, integrity, physical fitness, sportsmanship, cooperation and personal responsibility.
- Implements codes of conduct for coaches, players, and parents of the Unified Basketball Team.
- Ability to work the expected hours to include arriving prior to the student athlete arrival and departure times.
- Maintains a thorough knowledge of game and competition rules and has the ability to educate student-athletes to share in that understanding, including the rules of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA).
- Develops appropriate training programs and practice schedule
- Ensure the proper cleaning, storage and maintenance of all athletic equipment and uniforms are adhered to in conjunction with the Athletic Director.
- Travels with student-athletes on the team bus both to and from games.
- Demonstrates knowledge of strategies and rules of applicable sport.
- Adheres to all financial policies of the district in the regards to the collection, disbursement of money, expenses and receipts.
- Works with the Athletic Trainer(s) and completes injury reports for any student injured within 24 hours even if the athlete does not see a physician.
- Maintains necessary records and completes required paperwork and required team and individual statistics in a specified time and manner.
- Works with the Athletic Department staff to ensure the proper forms including physical, attendance, parent consent and medical information is collected prior to the start of the season.
- Enforces the policies and procedures of the Somerville School Committee and the Somerville High School Student Handbook.
- Supervises appropriate behavior of students from arrival to departure, both on and off the field, including the locker room, buses, practices, and at home and away games.
- Maintains a safe environment and facilities for all student athletes at all times.
- Attends the annual coaches meeting.
- Demonstrates commitment to protect student athletes from inappropriate conduct.
- Proven ability to enforce all rules in all sport-related activities and venues.
- Must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects and procedures pertinent to applicable sport including rules of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA).
- Proven ability to work in a professional and friendly manner with various contingencies; i.e. students, teachers, parents, administrators, boosters, media, officials and the school community and public.
- Reports to the Athletic Director and Somerville High School Principal any disciplinary issues immediately.
- Performs other duties as requested by the Athletic Director, Principal and the Superintendent of Schools and/or his/her designee.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited college or university is preferred.
- Previous successful playing and/or coaching; experience working with adolescents.
- Current Red Cross CPR, First Aid Certification, completion of the MIAA Coaches Education Class and other requirements by the MIAA.
Terms of Employment: Seasonal Appointments will expire unless renewed within sixty (60) days of the last regular season game
