IYRS School of Technology & Trades is the premier marine trades and advanced technologies career school. Located in the heart of downtown Newport, RI, IYRS leads the region and nation in academic outcomes related to skilled-workforce training, retention, graduation, and employment rates. 


IYRS School of Technology & Trades is the only accredited private non-profit career school in Rhode Island recognized by the Department of Education. Our 3-acre harbor-front campus houses amazing facilities with traditional and state-of-the-art equipment. Our mission is to empower students through immersive, hands-on innovative learning to realize their full potential. IYRS offers four certificate programs for people interested in careers in marine trades and advanced technologies. Position Summary

This role is responsible for the comprehensive maintenance and oversight of IYRS facilities, including two academic buildings, administrative offices, a library, 23 commercial units, outdoor event spaces, and parking areas. Key responsibilities include managing building systems, coordinating with contractors and trades for preventive maintenance, inspections, and improvement projects, and ensuring the upkeep of both interior and exterior spaces.


Additional duties include landscape care—such as tree and shrub maintenance—and seasonal tasks like snow removal. The position also involves working closely with contracted cleaning staff to maintain cleanliness across offices, public areas, and restrooms. Responsiveness to the needs of IYRS management and commercial tenants is essential to ensure a safe, clean, and well-functioning environment.

Requirements

Major Responsibilities

  • Maintain preventative maintenance schedules on all buildings and equipment across campus  
  • Coordinate and support necessary vendors and contractors  
  • Plan and coordinate maintenance and improvement projects, initiate service requests and apply for permits when needed 
  • Assist in capital improvement planning and implementation of capital improvement projects 
  • Provide basic maintenance support by making minor equipment repairs, assisting with light plumbing, replacing light bulbs, filters, and other preventive maintenance support 
  • Maintenance and repair operations include but are not limited to, areas of plumbing, minor electrical and carpentry work 
  • Keep floors, hallways, stairwells, main aisles clear of all debris and empty trash cans and recycling as needed with the assistance of contracted cleaning crew 
  • Perform basic grounds upkeep as needed 
  • Perform work during turnover of commercial units including cleaning, painting, carpet shampooing and other repairs 
  • Perform all duties according to established safety and efficiency procedures and maintains workstation in a neat, clean and orderly fashion 
  • Be responsible for the care, maintenance, inventory and proper use of all supplies, tools, and equipment owned by and/or used in the school in order to perform duties 
  • Adhere to and operate within OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) standards and school safety policies at all times 
  • Promptly report any problems including potential liability and workplace hazards to your supervisor 
  • Be available for after-hours emergencies and respond to calls in a timely manner 
  • Perform such other work-related duties as may be assigned by your supervisor 


Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combinations of education and experience.  
  • Valid Driver’s License required 
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  
  • Have the ability to deal with problems, with complex or minimal variables in standardized situations. 
  • Criminal background check required. 
  • Equipment operation and small boat handling a plus

  • Ability to stand for extended periods; use hands and fingers to handle, feel, and operate equipment; reach with hands and arms; communicate verbally and hear clearly.
  • Operate forklifts and aerial lifts.
  • Perform hoisting tasks as required.
  • Walk or climb ladders exceeding 10 feet in height and maintain balance.
  • Sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and detect odors.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently, and move items exceeding 100 pounds as necessary.
  • Possess specific visual capabilities including close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
