ANNUAL SALARY


$129,810 (flat-rated); $135,636 (flat-rated); and $137,327 (flat-rated)

The salary in the Department of Water and Power is $158,458 to $167,290.

DUTIES


An Air Conditioning Mechanic Supervisor assigns, reviews and evaluates the work of a crew engaged in the installation, modification, maintenance and repair of refrigeration, air conditioning, heating and ventilating equipment and related facilities; lays out and prepares cost estimates for new installations; updates and maintains a preventative maintenance program utilizing Maximo or a similar information platform; applies sound supervisory principles and techniques in building and maintaining an effective work group; and fulfills equal employment opportunity responsibilities.

Position Duties

Four years of full-time paid experience as an air conditioning mechanic or in a craft at the journey-level involved in the installation, modification, maintenance and repair of air conditioning, refrigeration, heating and ventilating equipment, two years of which must include experience working with one or more of the following controls:


  1. electric controls

  2. electronic controls

  3. pneumatic controls

  4. direct digital control systems

  5. energy management and building automation controls


PROCESS NOTES


  1. Applicants who lack six months or less of the required experience at the time of filing may file for this examination. However, they cannot be appointed until the full experience requirement is met.

  2. As a condition of employment, a valid Class C driver’s license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is required. Applicants will be disqualified and candidates will not be eligible for hire if their DMV record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation such as DUI or DWI in any state or jurisdiction. Notice of disqualification or ineligibility for hire may be issued by the City of Los Angeles at any time before a final job offer is extended.

  3. For Internal Use Only: Licensing verification will occur at the time of appointment.

  4. In accordance with Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) - Approved Universal Technician Certification is required at the time of filing. Applicants must provide their Certification ID number and Date of Certification.

  5. Applicants filing using their City of Los Angeles experience must submit with their application a “Verification of Work Experience” (VWE) form, with the required signatures, verifying their experience in the installation, modification, maintenance and repair of air conditioning, refrigeration, heating and ventilating equipment; and working with one or more of the controls specified in the requirement. The VWE form should indicate the type of work performed and the amount of time spent (percentage of overall job duties) performing such work. The “Verification of Work Experience” (VWE) form may be obtained on-line at http://per.lacity.org/exams/vwe-sup.pdf. Applicants may attach the completed VWE form to their on-line application at the time of filing, or will have seven (7) calendar days from the on-line submission date to e-mail a copy of their completed VWE form, including the required signatures, to [email protected]. The subject line of your e-mail must include the exam title, your name and indication it is a VWE. In the body of your e-mail, you must also include your first and last name, last four digits of your Social Security Number and contact phone number. Applicants who fail to submit their signed VWE form within the time required will not be considered further in this examination and their applications will not be processed.

The examination will consist entirely of an evaluation of professional and personal qualification by interview. In the interview, the following competencies may be evaluated: Judgment and Decision Making; Supervision; Interpersonal Skills; Oral Communication; Written Communication; Leadership; Safety Focus, including: safety practices, procedures, and safe working conditions when installing, modifying, maintaining, and repairing air-conditioning, refrigeration, heating, and ventilating equipment as required by the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal-OSHA); Job Knowledge, including knowledge of: methods and techniques used to install, operate, maintain, and repair air-conditioning machinery and equipment including low-pressure steam heating boilers; procedures used to test, diagnose, correct, service, and calibrate electrical, electronic, pneumatic, mechanical, and hydraulic problems in air-conditioning machinery and equipment; proper hand and power tools, equipment, and instruments used to test, repair, replace, and overhaul heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment; methods and techniques used to weld, cut, braze, solder, and join copper pipe and tubing used in the installation and overhaul of refrigeration, air-conditioning, gas heating, ventilation units, and related machinery and equipment; properties, characteristics, and proper application of materials used in heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment; and other necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Prior to the interview, candidates will be required to prepare some written material related to the duties and responsibilities of an Air Conditioning Mechanic Supervisor. This essay material will not be separately scored, but will be presented to the interview board for review and consideration, which may include discussion, in the overall evaluation of the candidate. Those who do not complete the advisory essay will not be invited to the interview and will be considered to have failed the entire examination. To be considered complete, the advisory essay must include a substantive response for each question or problem included in the advisory essay for which a candidate is required to provide an answer. Please note that candidates must complete the advisory essay and meet the minimum qualification as stated on this bulletin in order to be considered further in the examination process.


The advisory essay will be administered on-line. Candidates invited to participate in the examination will receive an e-mail from the City of Los Angeles outlining the specific steps needed to complete the on-line advisory essay. Candidates will be required to complete the on-line advisory essay between MONDAY DECEMBER 8, 2025 and MONDAY DECEMBER 15, 2025. Candidates who fail to complete the advisory essay as instructed may be disqualified.


Candidates will be notified later by e-mail of the date, time, and location of the interview, which may be held in Los Angeles or on-line. It is anticipated that interviews will begin during the period of TUESDAY JANUARY 20, 2026 to MONDAY JANUARY 26, 2026.

Candidates in the examination process may file protests as provided in Sec. 4.20, 4.22, and 4.23 as applicable and within the required time frame; however, the Personnel Department may respond to and resolve protests prior to the establishment of the eligible list.
