Position Duties
- Provides medical services to sheltered animals whether sick or injured.
- Assists in treatments of animals seized under cruelty prosecutions.
- Performs inventory audit of all impounded animals in the care of the shelter.
- Performs in house animal examinations, medical evaluations, and monitors progress of health of designated animals, as needed.
- Prepares and maintains records of all treatments and euthanasia's.
- Provides advice to citizens on ability to adopt individual pets.
- Provides for care, feeding, and watering of animals.
- Maintains and stores medical equipment and supplies; check supplies for adherence specifications.
- Prepares specimens to be tested and/or sent to the State Lab.
- Observes animals in quarantine and reports any problems to the supervisor.
- Inspects animals for various identifiers including tags, tattoos, microchips, injury and observes animals for illness.
- Euthanizes and disposes of sick, injured, and unclaimed animals.
- Prepares animals for adoption and rescue by evaluating medically and giving vaccinations as needed.
- Prepares reports as required, maintains necessary forms and records on all animals.
- Maintains proper paperwork, including medical, impound, rabies vaccinations, surgery logs, controlled substances logs, adoption records, and follow up adoption calls,
- Processes spay/neuter vouchers; assists veterinarian with spay/neuter of shelter animals.
- Assists officers on calls outside of the shelter as needed.
- Performs routine or light maintenance on equipment and shelter, including catch poles, cat/snake tongs, traps, kennels, etc., as job requires.
- Destroys narcotics, biohazardous contaminated uniforms or evidence as needed from the Union County Sheriff's Office.
- Maintains data log of all animals received into the shelter with date, time, description, pickup location, and final disposition information.
- Coordinates animal trap placement and retrieval and maintains trap log.
- Conducts adoptions, rescues, returns, and updates; follows up on adopted animals.
- Recommends and performs purchasing and inventory activities for supplies and materials.
- Sanitizes and cleans animal kennels, cages, bedding and facility using approved disinfectants to reduce the spread of harmful diseases and viruses throughout the shelter..
- Educates the general public on animal welfare, zoonotic diseases and County ordinances.
- Assists with the Rabies Clinics with vaccinations and certificates.
- Works with volunteers, organizations such as Girl Scouts, church groups and school groups.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires a high school diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED). Bachelor's Degree and two (2) years of experience in veterinary clinic or animal control facility; graduation from a two-year veterinary technology program possessing a license from the veterinary medical board as a Veterinary Technician or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
Licenses or Certifications:
Rabies Vaccinator Certification, Certification as Euthanasia Technician for North Carolina. If the certificate is not held at time of assignment, it must be obtained within twelve (12) months.
Certification in Dog Behavior is preferred. Possession of a valid driver's license.
