About the Department

Under direct supervision of the Jail Nurse Manager, the Registered Nurse will develop, initiate and coordinate the patient plan of care through assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation in collaboration with the healthcare team and in compliance with all agency, local, state, federal laws and regulations. This job is performed in a correctional facility which includes minimum, medium, or maximum-security levels. This role routinely requires interaction with persons served in providing medical or mental health assessment, care and medication. Employees are exposed to some level of risk and/or harm by persons served including exposure to blood borne pathogens. Employee is expected to work in accordance with all security rules and regulations to minimize the risk of danger and/or harm to themselves or other employees. Employees assigned to this classification work independently with minimal supervision. Work assignments are both general and specific in nature and are received in both verbal and written form. Instructions received define overall objectives, with some specificity regarding how to proceed with assignments.

Education/Training
  • B.S.N. degree or related advanced nursing degree from an accredited college or university preferred.   Associates Degree from an approved nursing program for RN required.
  • Current Washington State Registered Nurse License
  • Licenses must be maintained in an active status without suspension or revocation throughout
Experience: 
  • Prefer a minimum of one (1) year of clinical experience.

Position Duties

  • Utilizes the nursing process to provide quality and efficient patient care according to established standards including: accurately completing admission and other assessments, and collecting, analyzing, and prioritizing assessment data to facilitate proper patient care
    1. Transcribe physician orders 
    2. Document nursing assessments into the EPIC program
    3. Prepare and administer medication in accordance with physician orders including: immunizations, antibiotics, narcotic pain medications, vitamins, topical agents, insulin, blood thinners, and allergy antigens. 
    4. Initiate standardized procedures, orders, i.e., detox, opiate, alcohol 
  • Perform laboratory procedures and testing to include: blood glucose with visual or meter interpretation; interpretation of skin testing results; dipstick urine; urine specific gravity
  • Obtain specimens for laboratory testing including but not limited to: venipuncture; straight catheterization for urine collection; throat culture; sputum specimens; stool specimens 
  • Coordinate the activities of his/her shift, responds to the intake area as requested and coordinates/communicates with Correction staff as needed 
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and secure working environment 
  • Triage and communicate with physician or Nursing supervisor any potentially significant medical complaints or observations discovered during routine duties 
  • Respond and initiate lifesaving measures to man-down calls, identify medical emergencies, and arrange for transportation to hospital
  • May assist in the job shadow portion of the interview process, orientation and training of new and potential staff
  • May participate in performance evaluations and training of other team members
  • Under the direction officer or Manager, or according to standing orders, prepares, carries out, evaluates and revises treatment plans for individual patients; coordinates communications between various providers and community resources for patient care and benefits
  • Provides communicable disease prevention education to individuals and groups identified as at risk
  • Conducts communicable disease testing and counseling including harm reduction, immunizations, and screening with at-risk persons/population 
  • Collaborates with facility staff regarding client medical care plans 
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative, effective working relationships with coworkers, other employees, and the general public using principles of good customer service 
  • Reports for scheduled work with regular, reliable and punctual attendance 
  • Performs other duties as assigned
