Position Summary
The Senior Manager, Grants and Donor Relations is responsible for grant-writing and reporting and developing donor-facing written materials for use in cultivation and stewardship efforts. Supervised by the Director of Development, this position will manage a portfolio of institutional funders and family/community foundations and will also plan and execute CLC’s Annual Fund email fundraising program. This position also works closely with the VP, Development, and requires exceptional writing and organizational skills, and experience with foundation fundraising.
While this position is open to candidates nationwide, preference may be given to qualified candidates in the DC metro area.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage grant-writing efforts for CLC’s portfolio of 30+ foundation supporters, by tracking grant deadlines, generating drafts, and coordinating with relevant program staff to ensure high-quality, timely submissions.
- Create and maintain written materials about CLC’s priorities, strategies, and impact to use as external resources with donors and internal team talking points.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with a portfolio of institutional funders and family/community foundation donors, giving approximately $10K-$150K annually. Advance cultivation and stewardship strategies to maintain and increase grants and gifts.
- Support the expansion of CLC’s funder base by identifying and cultivating new foundation prospects.
- Manage the Annual Fund program, which includes writing quarterly email appeals to donors who give $10,000 or less, in collaboration with the Senior Manager, Data and Analytics.
- Create timely email updates about CLC’s impact for major donors, in close coordination with the Communications team.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in foundation relations, grant-writing, development and nonprofit fundraising
- Track record of developing winning grant proposals and demonstrated understanding of grant cycles
- Experience cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding a portfolio of funders
- Proven written and communication skills and demonstrated ability to translate complex information into understandable language for different audiences
- Highly organized self-starter
- Familiarity with and knowledge of philanthropic trends
- Knowledge and experience with donor databases (Raiser’s Edge preferred)
- Strong listening and relationship development skills and sensitivity to interpersonal dynamics
- Experience working in the democracy field and/or a legal or policy nonprofit preferred
- Commitment to CLC’s mission and willingness to develop/expand expertise in the legal advocacy space
- Capacity to take initiative, prioritize duties, and work independently while functioning as a member of a team
