Department: Production

Reports To: Associate Technical Director 

Compensation: $29.85 per hour  

Benefits: Benefits Eligible 


This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement with IATSE Local 13.


Position Summary  

The Carpenter builds, installs, and maintains scenic elements and effects for all Guthrie productions, providing a visual foundation for each production. This position will create, produce, and provide scenic elements that meet the needs of the show, designer, director, and actor. The Carpenter also assists in the maintenance and upkeep of the shop and storage areas to provide a safe and efficient work environment.  All employees are expected to center, model and champion the Guthrie’s core values of Artistic Excellence; Community; Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility; and Fiscal Responsibility.


The typical schedule is Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. This position works 40 hours per week and is guaranteed a minimum of 44 work weeks per fiscal (September 1 - August 31) year.

 Primary Duties and Responsibilities 

  

1. Construction, Installation and Maintenance of Scenery & Effects

  • Build, create, modify and install scenery, effects and rigging to convey the designer’s vision, meet the functional requirements of the play and ensure durability and safety standards. 
  • Interpret design and working drawings.
  • Work individually or as part of a team on projects as assigned.
  • Maintain a running dialogue with the Scene Shop Coordinator, fellow Carpenters and TD staff.
  • Maintain expected levels of craftsmanship and artistic excellence. 
  • Become familiar with design concepts and construction drawings in order to efficiently address questions from overhire staff. 
  • Transition between tasks and projects when designs or priorities shift.
  • Create prototypes, when necessary, to determine the most appropriate construction method and material.

2. Maintenance of Spaces and Supplies

  • Participate in load-in and strike of scenic elements.
  • Maintain rigging equipment and inventory.
  • Restore tools and equipment to the proper location when no longer in use.
  • Maintain safe conditions and operable shop tools, notifying the Scene Shop Supervisor and TD staff as needed.
  • Clean and organize workspaces, tools, raw materials and scenic elements. Participate in this regular practice.

Requirements

 Essential Knowledge and Qualifications  

  • Experience in theatrical carpentry or a combination of equivalent experience and training
  • Skill in interpreting drawings to reproduce designs accurately.
  • Skill in metal and woodworking.
  • Basic knowledge of construction techniques to build scenery.
  • Basic rigging knowledge.
  • Basic sewing skills.
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of materials to offer greater flexibility in executing designs.
  • Forklift experience preferred.
  • Can lift 50 lbs. continuously throughout an assigned shift. 
  • Can problem solve creatively.
  • Strong commitment to safety and ergonomics in the workplace.
